Congratulations @mistermisterchen @notjanecole @callmedoctorong and the many, many, many people who brought this remarkable and long overdue show to life. I can’t wait to go back again and again to continue to learn about the pioneering and inspiring #asianamerican artists who built a movement and, indeed, a legacy.

The Chinatown we know and love is under threat! Protecting the community from the proposed mega jail’s impact begins with having a seat at the table. Recently, I had the honor to dine with some important and influential people at Hakka Cuisine, NYC’s first Hakka restaurant. They bring contemporary dishes that respect Chinese classical cuisine traditions that have stood the test of time in NYC. The term “Hakka,” originating from Cantonese as “guest families” vividly portrays the arduous history of multiple forced mass migrations, which displaced the Hakka people from their ancestral central plains to the souther coastline. Over a fantastic dinner served family style, we learned about what the city is planning, the Chinatown community's efforts to address it, and what we all stand to lose. Here are some important takeaways from our discussion: * If allowed to build, this will be the tallest jail in the world * The effects/impacts of such a project are massive, already being felt, are long-term and in some cases permanent – environmental, cultural, economic * Chinatown is resilient, but has already suffered so much * The community demands and deserves a real seat at the table alongside City leadership to collaborate on size, scale, and other design elements that affect quality of life both for the detainees and Chinatown residents * We invite our fellow New Yorkers to take a seat at the table with Chinatown and show their support Here’s how you can help: Follow @nubcnyc and @welcome.to.Chinatown, and sign-up for NUBC’s newsletter (link in their profile) for the latest on the community’s ongoing advocacy efforts, updates on meetings with City Hall, and how you can help support and get involved.
