The Milwaukee Turners were proud to stand with several other community organizations and leaders as County Executive David Crowley signed legislation to remove Flock cameras from Milwaukee County park property earlier today.

Our community's message is clear: We do not want AI powered warrantless mass surveillance in Milwaukee.

This is a @wkamaubell Appreciation Post.

Last week, Kamau and I traveled from separate coasts to meet in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a nonpartisan midterms event with @acluofwi. It was made clear that “how goes Wisconsin goes the rest of the country,” and now putting my partisan hat on, the feeling was palpable that this state could go all blue in the midterms. It was great to hear from legal leaders in the state and lifelong activists and organizers.

Kamau had a lot to say about voting, and about how important the down ballot races are especially for people who aren’t spending every waking (and sleeping) moment poring over poll numbers or sweating over soundbites, but instead just desperately trying to pay for their food, healthcare and childcare. I always learn so much from Kamau and literally couldn’t imagine processing whatever these times are without him. I’d almost go so far as saying he’s always right.

He talked about letting go of your preconceived notions. The less you shame the more you invite people to the table, and lord knows we need longer tables and a lot less shame. The most important thing, he said, is learning how to SHUT UP. Not in a “shut up you’re an idiot” sort of way but in a shut up, and spend more time listening to what other people are going through and less time telling them what they’re going through. That works for everyone. On all sides. Until there’s no sides and just a big circle. Let’s call that circle…Earth. As if, we all belong here or something.

He also said we were all NERDS. This nerd was super grateful for all he said in a state as important as Wisconsin, and all he does for the ACLU.

Like I said - he’s almost always right. If I wasn’t such a nerd that might get annoying, but hey, we can’t all be Jeopardy Champions*

And tonight I traveled almost as far as Milwaukee, to Stamford, CT, to take my dad to see Kamau at his day job (aka his night job) doing stand up. If I learned one thing tonight it’s this - don’t go chasing waterfalls. Just don’t.

Also - early voting is where it’s at!

What an honor to be called “nerds who care” by @wkamaubell at the ACLU Wisconsin’s inaugural Reclaiming Our Rights function. It was an excellent afternoon of community, engagement, and inspiration, and we were thrilled to be able to support.

Thanks to our team members who could attend, our friend Angela of @honeybeesagewellness, and our clients who are doing important work with the @acluofwi.

Join @milwaukeeturners @acluofwi, and many others *today* at 5:30pm in Room 301-B at Milwaukee’s City Hall to demand we end any and all agreements between the Milwaukee Police Department and Flock (makers of very hackable “automated license plate readers,” also widely used to track individuals).

Flock’s guidance on lobbying city councils makes one thing very clear: these cameras are tools for mass surveillance, and they know it. This flawed, unsecure technology will never be used responsibly by law enforcement — as long as they have access, they’ll abuse it, and share access with others.
