Thank you to @adam_tpac @riverlin1984 and @huangdingyun (my philosophical guide ❤️) for letting the experiments continue, and for making room for an attempt to stage a destiny.
Destiny (working title) will keep growing and changing. These moments of meeting an audience are part of the research: to test something fast and furious, acknowledge it isn’t finished, and do it anyway.
I’ve been asking what a work of scale is. Not only how many bodies it holds, but how far an idea travels and how it answers to the place it lands.
So in a dream scenario, Destiny meets a local ensemble each time it travels, with performers who hold the score, pass it on, remix it and at times refuse. - how does a place have agency over what destiny is performed? Geography is a destiny.
Thank you to @ari___angkasa @alleyable and @wailok.cwl for following me into the dark and predicitons for trying through the seance of the dance - That’s the part I believe in.

There is no map.
There are guesses.
Hunches.
A tumble.
A grip.
Ka mua ka muri
We walk backwards into the future.
The past ahead of us, where we can see it.
The future behind us, where we can’t.

A little while ago, I had the privilege of meeting a group of beautiful people with beautiful souls.

ADAM stands for “Asia Discovers Asia Meeting,” a gathering that brings artists from different parts of Asia together to meet, exchange, and discover one another. I find the idea behind this name especially meaningful: Asia discovering Asia through each other.

During the time we spent together, we explored the culture of Manila while sharing our artistic practices, approaches, and ways of thinking with one another.

I’m truly grateful to have met them, and through this journey, I also came to understand myself in different ways.

Each of us arrived in this city carrying different perspectives, thoughts, and cultures. While spending time with them, I found myself thinking a lot about “creativity.”

Through workshops, conversations, collaborations, and creating our presentations together, I felt that I gradually came to know each of them more deeply. Along the way, I began to realize how closely creativity is connected to who we are, our personalities, the way we see things, the way we respond to one another, and the cultures we carry with us.

And perhaps the most beautiful part was when we all gathered together. We could look at the same place, the same material, or the same question, and see completely different things. Through these different perspectives, I felt I could appreciate each person and the beautiful things they created in a different way.

That was perhaps the most beautiful part of this journey for me.

Thanks to everyone, Albert, Ari, Lok, Magiliw, Nga, Shingo. We came from across mountains and seas（千山萬水）, and somehow, we all came together here.

I went into @adam_tpac with my project-in-development, “Militansya ng Manika.” Integrating my activism with choreography while acquiring valuable questions and dramaturgical sources for further development. I got to test curiosities with my generous fellow artists as I find my own reason why I move and what forces me to do it.

There was a question asked during one of our sessions, “When does a choreographer decide that the movement is the driving force?”

I guess with my own practice, the point of decision comes from the reason why I do it in the first place. The act of walking emphasize moments in my life where I hated it because having little to no allowance in college would mean I have to walk tired going home for 45 minutes in the middle of the night from our late rehearsals. Missing a trolley at the railway or opting from paying the whole ride because I need to save money would mean I have to walk a bridge with the fear of encountering perverts, dodging flying rocks and glass bottles from gangs at war, and the occasional death threats of a mentally challenged homeless person.

I would soon reclaim walking as an expression of my resistance during rallies and mobilizations. From walking alone at night full of risks to walking all day along with comrades at the comfort of solidarity for better living conditions, in between layers of struggle as a lower middle class citizen heavily affected by poor transport system due to corruption, and as a woman of trans experience always in surveillance and unsafe in public. The act of walking, being in transit from one point to another; one place to another; to reach an aspiration of comfort from a place of hardship is the driving force why I believe I keep going.

Warmest gratitude to our curators Ate Ness and Ming-Chen for allowing us to play and experiment during our studio days. Especially to my fellow artists: Albert, Ari, Lok, Shingo-san, Nga, and Yun for helping me unlock new pathways in this work-in-progress. Tuloy and rampa! 加油!
