Mortiboys bound for Banyoles as Charlie rules Grafham

Hayley Mortiboys qualifies for European Championships at first attempt after Charlie Rule rides through the field.

Grafham European Standard Distance Duathlon Qualifier Result:

🥇 Charles Rule 🥈Stuart Brown 🥉 Adam Coates

🥇 Hayley Mortiboys 🥈Veronica Green-Jones 🥉Gwen Kinsey

Hayley Mortiboys has booked her place on the GB team just two months after taking up multisport, claiming a thrilling back-and-forth victory over Veronica Green-Jones in her first-ever qualifier.

Still competing on a road bike, pre-race favourite Mortiboys led the opening run before conceding over four minutes to 40–44AG double European Champion Green-Jones on the bike. Before regaining the lead on the final run.

“Hayley is a beautiful runner,” said Green-Jones. “It was a real game of cat and mouse — she caught me on the final section of the 5k. I’m delighted for her, and for [my coach] Gwen, who came third as well!”

50–54AG European Champion Gwen Kinsey took a distant third. Completing a podium featuring two reigning European champions and topped by one of GB’s brightest prospects to one day become one.

“I am so pleased and honestly shocked,” said Mortiboys. “When [Green-Jones] came past me on the bike, I was in awe. I worked so hard to keep her in sight but just couldn’t hold on. When we got to the run, I gave it everything to close the gap — and somehow managed to win. So happy!”

In the open race, 20–24 AG European Middle Distance Champion Charlie Rule found himself 90 seconds behind a lead quartet including Thomas Homes and Henry Eastham. But a blistering sub-1-hour bike split put him firmly in control.

Stuart Brown produced the surprise of the day, staying with the early pace before unleashing a 17:45 final 5k to put some pressure on Rule. A huge performance from the man whose best multisport results this year include second and eighth in local competitions at Lingwood and Dorney.

Homes - also on a road bike - faded on the bike to finish sixth, while the second fastest bike split lifted Adam Coates to third with Eastham and Tom Shardlow rounding out the top five.

Thomas Homes takes on Charlie Rule and Hayley Mortiboys goes for gold at Grafham

Grafham European Standard Distance Duathlon Qualifier Preview:

Sub-16 5k runner Hayley Mortiboys (née Carruthers) headlines the penultimate qualifier of the season at Grafham Water this weekend, aiming to secure a place at the 2026 European Championships in Banyoles in just her third multisport event.

The 32-year-old only began her multisport journey two months ago, taking second place in a close finish at Wombourne, before dominating the September sprint duathlon at Darley Moor. That victory propelled her to GB duathlon ranking #34, making her the highest-ranked contender on the start line.

Mortiboys faces competition from Veronica Green-Jones, the double European Triathlon Champion in the 40–44 age group, and Sarah Terry, in a repeat of their clash at Hever last year.

Terry took the win on that occasion, with Green-Jones sixth — but after her all-conquering performance in Istanbul, expect a stronger Green-Jones this time around.

In the 50–54 age group, European Sprint Triathlon Champion Gwen Kinsey makes her first duathlon appearance in over a year. Joined by Hayley Plumber, who remains undefeated this season following wins at Goodwood and Dorney.

In the open category, rising junior Thomas Homes returns after his impressive second-place finish at Upton, achieved in sweltering 32-degree heat. He lines up against Charles Rule, the 20–24 European Middle Distance Champion, making his first duathlon appearance since the 2023 British University Championships.

Elite Cross Triathlete Lewis Williams is also be one to watch. Two years ago, he endured a nightmare race here, missing a turn on the bike and riding an extra 14 km. Since then, he’s produced standout performances — including a 1:50 finish at Eton Dorney in March — which speaks well to his chances (assuming it’s the same Lewis Williams!).

Meanwhile, Adam Coates returns a week after finishing 13th at the highly competitive British Championships at Oulton Park, and Henry Eastham, a top-five World Championship finisher in the 35–39 age group, is also among the favourites.

⚡️2023 ⚡️ Oh where do I begin? I wrapped up the year yesterday at @abbeyhousehtl & it completed a year of Incredible weddings where I’ve met the best couples & suppliers along the way. I’ve been so looked after by all the amazing venues I get to work at so thanks so much! I have the best job!

It was my 2nd full year since going full time & I’m trying to better myself as each one goes by. This year Ive tried to push myself into new things out of my comfort zone & tried some new things creatively - it’s been awesome.

I also had a little rebrand this year on my website and across the whole look and feel of my social media. I’m now where I want to be and I’ve had so much positive feedback! Social media is a 2nd job at times, so thanks so much for every like, comment or share on any of my posts, stories or reels.. it means everything to a small business.

If I’m at your wedding next year or this year whenever you read this, I’ll see you there! Bring on 2024!

Happy New Year guys ❤️
