Who decides if you’re good enough? 🤔

Hearing “nice job!” from your coach feels amazing. Compliments are great. You deserve to be seen for your hard work. ⚽️

But what happens when your coach says nothing? Or you don’t score? Or someone else gets all the praise?

If you NEED other people’s approval to feel confident, then THEY are in charge of your confidence, not you.

EXTERNAL validation is wonderful. It’s important to feel seen and it makes us feel good. BUT other people’s praise should be the cherry on top 🍒. Meaning, it’s nice to have, but you don’t NEED it to feel confident. This is important to understand because you will NEVER be able to FULLY CONTROL whether you get this from people or not.

What can you control? Whether you get this from YOU.

So after your next game, instead of asking “Do they think I played well?” ask yourself:

👉 What did I do for myself today? What do I feel good about?

Maybe you:
✔️ Worked hard every single minute
✔️ Bounced back right after a mistake
✔️ Talked to your teammates the whole game
✔️ Tried that move you’ve been practicing

Even if your coach doesn’t praise you for these things, YOU CAN (and must) let yourself feel good about them. Because THIS is where confidence is built. It’s not built in the big flashy moments that we think it is, it’s built in these small moments of having our own back. Moving ourselves forward. Experiencing our own greatness.

From @addy_weichers

For the longest time I thought I was slow…😫😅

During my redshirt freshman year of college, my second game back from an ACL injury, I got beat in a 1v1 against a very fast forward who scored off of it.

This encounter shaped what I thought of myself for the next 4 years…

I let that seed of a thought place roots deep in my brain.

This meant I forgot all the other times I had won my defensive 1v1s.

I focused solely on the ones I lost due to me thinking I was slow.

I let those thoughts replay in my head, over and over.

I let in the self-doubt.

To combat this, I did extra speed and agility work…

I did 1v1s all the time after practice to try and fix the problem…

And then I learned something that changed everything…

Turns out I had been going in with the wrong footing to my 1v1s and my speed wasn’t an issue. I had let my self talk get in the way so badly that it had changed by identity. Who I thought I was, was NOT ACTUAL REALITY 🤔🤔🤔🤔

This perspective shift was what I needed.

Here’s how I got out of the self-doubt slump:

✔️ I looked at the process objectively.
✔️ I got curious about the details
✔️ I focused on what I could control.
✔️ I went out there and trained the pieces I needed to train.

And then I got INTENTIONAL with my self-talk ❤️

Self talk is such an important part of the game that allows you to play at your full potential.
Only let in things that are good, useful and constructive.

And watch yourself unlock your game.

Do you know the difference between playing “in your head” and playing “out of your mind”? 🤔

Playing in your head looks like getting stuck on mistakes, hesitating, second-guessing yourself, rushing, and taking the safe option every time.

“Out of your mind” doesn’t mean something bad. It means OUT OF YOUR MIND, as in, NOT OVERTHINKING. It means you are playing GREAT.

Playing out of your mind looks like being present, trusting your instincts, adapting to whatever happens, and having a “what’s next?” mentality.

We teach this using 3 color zones (credit to Dr. Tiffany R. Jones of X-Factor Performance Consulting 🙌)

🟢 Green Zone: too relaxed, too comfortable, not dialed in

🔵 Blue Zone: locked in. Confident, brave, creative, bouncing back fast from mistakes. This is the ONLY zone where you play your very best.

🔴 Red Zone: frazzled, anxious, overwhelmed, stuck on the last mistake or worried about the next one

You CAN play well in green or red. But you’ll never play your VERY best there.

Most players already know they need to stop overthinking, handle pressure, and be more confident. They WANT to. They’ve just never been given the HOW.

Mental skills work is all about the how. 💙

There are two definitions of success. The first one is winning, scoring, clean sheet, winning your tackles, your 1v1s etc. These things are important. But what is more important is definition number two. And that one is, each and every day, am I moving forward toward the player and person I want to be?

Here’s the thing about definition number 2: it’s completely 100% controllable by you. Nobody can take it away from you or stop you from doing it.

Don’t wait for the scoreboard to tell you whether you won or not today, define what success looks like for you before you even hit the pitch. Because when you define success only as things you have full control over, NOBODY can stop you from “winning.”

Here are 5 ways to find success at your next game, regardless of the score:

1. Focus on what you can control. Don’t make your success dependent on scoring, winning, starting, or other people’s opinions. Ask yourself: what can I control today?

2. Choose how you want to show up. Maybe that’s brave, focused, competitive, positive, composed. Success = showing up as the player you want to be.

3. Set realistic goals — ones you FULLY control. Instead of only “I want to score,” try “I want to make aggressive runs” or “I want to communicate constantly.”

4. Measure your response. You won’t control everything that happens. But you can control what you do next. Mistake → reset. Bad call → refocus. Missed chance → keep going.

5. Define success as: me moving myself forward. Each and every day, you can move forward toward the player you want to be — and nobody can stop you from doing that.

And here’s the big secret. Only let your confidence be attached to THESE THINGS. That is how you get unshakeable confidence that nobody can touch.

Where does your confidence come from?

If your confidence depends on things like scoring, starting, winning, or making no mistakes — your confidence will change every time your circumstance does. Because those things are NOT in your 100% control.

Instead, if you want consistent confidence, you HAVE to attach it to things you can FULLY control. Effort. Preparation. Scanning. Communication. Tracking back on defense. Bravery to try a 1v1. And the list goes on.

True, deep confidence — real belief in yourself and your abilities — is confidence that isn’t dependent on your environment. It’s confidence that’s only attached to your input. And your input is all the things you can control: how am I showing up? Am I getting better? What are the controllable things I can do in my game today — work ethic, being a good teammate, making runs off the ball, picking my head up, staying on my toes, choosing my shot placement.

Of course you’re going to have feelings about playing time, or missing an opportunity, or making a mistake. But those things don’t get to determine how you feel about yourself. They don’t get to determine your self-worth or your self-belief.

That’s all attached to one question: am I moving forward toward being the player and person I want to be today? That’s your input. That’s what your confidence is attached to. That’s what you let yourself feel good about.

You don’t have full control whether you score. But you can control how you prepare, how you compete, and how you respond when things get tough.

Build your confidence on the controllable things — the things nobody can take away from you.

That’s what puts your confidence in your own hands. And that’s what changes everything about your game.
