POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This past weekend, our community suffered a heartbreaking loss. The murals at El Sereno Middle School, created by the hands of youth, volunteers, and the incredible artist Dezmond Crockett, were vandalized.

Among them was a mural celebrating excellence. Icons like Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, and Kobe Bryant looked down on students daily, reminding them of their power, history, and limitless potential.

We’re not backing down. We’re restoring the mural.

But we need your help.

Donate, share, volunteer: in the link on our bio
Let’s turn heartbreak into healing, and show our youth that their voices still matter.

As some of you may know from watching my stories, ive been working on a mural at a middle school for the past 4 weekends and today was going to be my last day of working on it but when i arrived today we found the mural and the area around it had been totally vandalized. My initial thoughts and feelings as you might imagine were of horror, anger, and confusion. I wondered if was a racially motivated attack being that the mural itself was racially motivated but not in a domineering or intrusive way. The school itself is predominantly latino but it does have a small cohort of black students as well and the mural was funded through a grant aimed at uplifting those students through various programs. The mural was meant to serve as a point of inspiration for all the students of the school to see greatness in themselves as well as others, to bridge that cultural gap and expand their perceptions but upon further inspection it became apparent to me that this was likely done by children. While this will be an ongoing investigation to find those responsible and hold them accountable, my next feeling was one of inspiration. I took a moment to see an opportunity in all this. As a teacher, an artist and a man of faith I recognized my responsibility to set an example for restitution, resilience and composure. Im not a child who cant see the bigger picture, seeking vengeance and denying redemption. The work i do is for the children of tomorrow and so that this world will be a little better than the way i found it. What would it mean if i gave up, or let this slide or simply complained? That would be a disservice to everyone who put their faith in me. So I will be working with my partners towards resolving all this with integrity and creativity. Ill provide updates on what we come up with in the coming days and i just want to let you all know im even more motivated to continue my work and be the man im meant to be 🙏🏾
