Manong came to us this morning ready to surrender both of his dogs. One is pregnant.

He wasn’t giving them up because he’d stopped caring. He was giving them up because he cares so much. He was afraid he couldn’t feed the puppies, and he didn’t want to keep relying on other people’s kindness.

Look at his dogs. They’re well-fed and their coats are healthy. He feeds them before he feeds himself. A man with very little has been giving them most of what he has. Now, facing more lives than he can provide for, he was about to let go of the companions he loves most.

This is the part of animal welfare we don’t see.

From far away it looks simple: take the animals and the problem is solved. Up close it’s love and worry, and a man’s dignity, and a painful choice made with a heavy heart.

So I told him, “We will find a way.”

We’ll provide veterinary care, including spaying, which will end the pregnancy. We’ll work toward returning at least one dog to him, with ongoing support. We now know the route he walks each day, so we can keep finding him and checking on them. He’s also looking for work, and we’ll see how we can help.

We don’t have all the answers. We will figure it out. Day by day. But care begins with listening.

Before we decide that someone has nothing to give an animal, maybe we should notice what he’s already giving. Then we can ask a better question: not “Who should take these animals?” but “What would help them stay together?”

Animal welfare is human welfare. 🧡🐾
