Update: TWINKIE IS STILL IN DANGER BUT WAS EXTENDED UNTIL MONDAY. Please save him.

Twinkie and Maxwell are scheduled to die at 8 am on Sunday 10/18 unless a foster or adopter steps up tonight. Their deadline has passed. This is their last chance to be noticed and make it out alive.

Twinkie #A2292863 is only 4. He arrived covered in wounds, still wearing his owner’s collar and tag. But no one showed up. Volunteers describe an affectionate, smart boy who is eager to bond.

Maxwell #A2284407 is just 1. His family surrendered him when they moved. He is still a goofy puppy who loves toys, splashing in the pool, and being with people.

Two young lives. Two boys who were failed by their owner. Both would thrive in a caring home without other dogs, where they can learn and decompress.

If you can help, do not wait until the shelter opens at 11 am. Arrive at 8 am when staff gets there. Twinkie and Maxwell could be euthanized before the doors open.

Update2: Twinkie's DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL TOMORROW MONDAY (10/19) 🆘️‼️

Update: STILL AT THE SHELTER WITH NO PLAN OF A SAFE EXIT 🆘️🚨💔
🚨TWINKIE EUTHANASIA DEADLINE 10/17 SATURDAY EOD 🆘️

Twinkie arrived at the shelter just over a month ago (September 4th). He was found roaming as a stray but microchipped. The owner was contacted by phone and mail. Both attempts went unanswered.

• In one-on-one interactions with volunteers, Twinkie is affectionate, connected, listens to cues such as sit, down, paw, and stay! He makes great eye contact with his handler and he loves to work for treats!

• When Twinkie arrived at the shelter after being found on the streets, he had wounds on his body that needed treatment. There's no information about what happened to him, but it's possible he was attacked by another dog or involved in a dog fight. With no confirmed history, he has been muzzled during playgroups out of caution.
In playgroups, he's been described as gentle/dainty, selective with dogs, playful, acts like a hall monitor*, stiff greetings, would benefit from continued socialization.

• Twinkie is a strong boy and he's still learning about the world. An experienced handler is important to help him thrive. Someone who can confidently show him that Twinkie is safe. He may be best as the only dog in the home.

• Due to kennel stress, Twinkie has been scheduled for euthanasia 💔 Adopter, foster or rescue is needed by this Saturday 10/17.

This boy has great potential, is VERY sweet and deserves a chance at life. Please share this reel so the right person can SEE Twinkie.

A 2-hour-break from the kennel AND the shelter environment could mean the WORLD to the pups 🌏

Drako got to sniff real grass, go for a nice walk and enjoy one-on-one attention.

Dogs at the shelter stay confined for 23.5 hours, DAYS or WEEKS in their kennels. A 2-hour-break is like a GIFT for them.

And no, you don't need to feel bad when bringing them back to the shelter. You gave them a moment where they could just be a.. "free" dog.
Then comes the question: which dog from the shelter can you give a wonderful moment like this to next? ✨️

____

➡️ How to take dogs from the shelter for this 2-hour outing?
You just need to be an approved LAAS foster.

Not a foster yet? Google “LAAS Fostering” or https://www.laanimalservices.com/about-fostering

👤 Apply in person: You can fill out the application online to speed things up, but you’ll need to complete the process in person at one of the LAAS shelters. Bring an ID.
🐕 35+ lbs & fixed: These outings are for dogs 35+ lbs who are already spayed/neutered—not puppies or small dogs. Exceptions may apply.
⏰ 8–10 AM: Hangouts are currently limited to the morning because of the summer heat (subject to change since the weather is cooling down).

*2 types of fostering available for LAAS-approved fosters: this day outing or an in-home foster.

• East Valley

The shelter can be a tough environment for any dog, especially for seniors.

Senior dogs can make wonderful companions for a slower-paced lifestyle, offering a special kind of calm that only they know.

They may be older, but they still have so much love to give ❤️

A special thank you to Monić @soundhealher.mo for giving our pups a peaceful and beautiful sound-healing experience during their much-needed break from the kennels.

Come meet our senior dogs at the shelter!

Update: IN FOSTER CARE 👏

George #A2280103 is set to lose his life at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. This darling 3-year-old pup will be euthanized unless a foster or adopter steps up before Wednesday, September 23rd at 4 pm because he is fearful and stressed. George arrived as a stray in June, initially very timid, but volunteers have seen a completely different side of him. In the yard, he is silly, joyful, and puppy-like, zooming around, romping with toys, and leaning in for pets. George also knows how to sit and takes treats gently. He has gained confidence through playgroups with other dogs, offering appropriate greetings and corrections while remaining social and steerable. Sadly, George was given a death sentence because the constant confinement has left him nervous and overwhelmed. All he needs is one caring person willing to open their heart and home to spare him a tragic end. Please share George’s story everywhere, pledge support, and consider being a foster or adopter today. He does not deserve to die for being afraid.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save him.

MAPLE IS HOME! 🍁❤️🇨🇦

From a Southern California shelter to living her absolute best life in Canada!

Our sweet Maple, formerly Pearl, was running out of time at the shelter. When we first saw her shelter video she had her little head stuck in her kennel, desperately needing someone to notice her. It was heartbreaking to see her like that, knowing she deserved so much more than the life she was facing.

Our incredible team member @emma_cunningham stepped up to foster her, and today we get to share the happiest ending!

Maple officially has a mom, a dad, and a furry brother who just so happens to be another Love’s Legacy Rescue alum!

Remember Happy from Devore Shelter?! 🥹 Well, he has a new sister!

Two Southern California shelter dogs who were once fighting for their lives are now living together in Canada with a family who loves them endlessly. THIS is why we do what we do.

Thank you to Maple and Happy’s amazing parents for opening your hearts and home to not one, but TWO of our rescue babies. And thank you to everyone who helped get Maple to this moment.

From having her head stuck in a shelter kennel to having a whole family of her own. We couldn’t have dreamed of a better ending for our girl.

Happy tails, sweet Maple. You are finally home. ❤️

Enzo #A2278214 is a puppy in danger at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. This handsome 10-month-old Shepherd mix urgently needs a foster or adopter by 4 pm on Wednesday, September 23rd, or he will be euthanized after being failed by his family. Adopted at 4 months old, Enzo was surrendered just six months later when his owner claimed he had reportedly tried to nip their children. Yet during his evaluation, even staff saw no signs of aggression. Volunteers say Enzo is a sweet, friendly, playful, energetic baby. He can be jumpy and mouthy and would greatly benefit from basic obedience training to improve his impulse control. In playgroup, he is social with other dogs, though his style can be rough, rowdy, and sometimes pushy. Instead of being given patience and guidance, young Enzo was left behind before he had the chance to grow up. Please share his story immediately, foster or adopt, or pledge support to help a reputable rescue pull him before his deadline. He deserves to finally know what it feels like to be safe, cherished, and chosen by someone who will never give up on him.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save him.

ADOPTED!!

Mango #A2261686 is set to be euthanized at North Central Shelter in Los Angeles. Unless he is adopted or fostered by Friday, September 18th at 4 pm, this precious 4-year-old boy will die after being left alone in a terribly stressful and frightening situation.
Mango arrived on March 18th with LAPD officers after he was discovered in a home during a welfare check while his owner was hospitalized. Sadly, no one ever reclaimed him. On August 11th, Mango’s owner’s sister called with the tragic news that his person had passed away. She said she had not known Mango was there and promised she would come to get him, but never showed up.
Volunteers describe him as “the easiest dog.” He is affectionate, adores pets and belly rubs, gives kisses, and gently accepts treats. He also has done well with other dogs and enjoys playful, rowdy yard time. But months of constant confinement are taking a heartbreaking toll. Mango circles and paces inside his cage, clearly terrified and confused.
After losing everything and waiting so long for someone to notice him, Mango is now in urgent danger and won’t survive without a miracle. Please share his story immediately. Pledge support, offer to foster, or open your heart and adopt him as your new best friend. Mango deserves a caring family who will never abandon him again.

**Please DM @friendsofnorthcentralshelter with any questions or interest in helping to save Mango.

3 hours of volunteering in less than 60s 🐕

Many pups spend far too much time confined to their shelter kennels, and the stress can really take a toll. So volunteers play the role of taking them for walks, give them one-on-one attention and remind them that there’s more to life than four concrete walls.

For the scared ones, we approach gently and patiently, helping them adjust to this environment.

For those abandoned by their families, we can’t replace a forever home, but we're here for them like family.

Cookie #A2289912
6 months, 44lbs, female (spayed)

For those at risk of losing their lives, we give everything we can to advocate for them.
Currently on the Urgent List:

🆘️ Braxx #A2287691
3 yrs, 65lbs, male (neutered)

🆘️ Fox #A2280619
2 yrs, 61lbs, male (neutered)

🆘️ Maxwell #A2284407
11 months, 64lbs, male (neutered)

...plus 10+ pups also at risk 🆘️🆘️🆘️

The reality of shelter life can be harsh. But this is where volunteers come in—to advocate for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Toby was scheduled for euthanasia (on 8/20). On the very day of his deadline, @delmardogrescue stepped in for him 🙌

In the rescue world, the perfect plan doesn’t always come together in a perfect time, but Del Mar Dog Rescue was able to find Toby a loving temporary foster home where he could finally begin to decompress and feel safe.

***Now, Toby desperately needs a long-term foster in LA or PREFERABLY SAN DIEGO, so he can continue to heal and thrive***
This is such a crucial step for a dog who has just come out of an incredibly stressful shelter environment.

Toby deserves the chance to discover that the world can also be loving and most importantly - safe and steady ❤️

If you can foster Toby, please DM @delmardogrescue; or foster application on their website dmdr.org
