These birds sound like dinosaurs.

These are Greater Sandhill Cranes. Despite only weighing 10-14 lbs (4.5-6.4 kg), adults can measure up to 5 ft (1.5 m) tall with wingspans greater than 7 ft (2.1 m) wide. When combined with their long necks, spindly legs, pointed beaks, red faces, yellow eyes, and sharp talons, sandhill cranes have often drawn comparisons to pop culture portrayals of pterodactyls. This resemblance has only been further cemented by their vocalizations, the most distinctive of which include long, rattling, and sometimes blood-curdling bugles that can be heard up to 2.5 miles (4 km) away.

Although pterodactyls were theropods (not dinosaurs), and although we do not know what they sounded like, this characterization isn't necessarily too far-off. Birds are modern-day descendants of theropods, and crane fossils dating to around 60 million years ago are among the oldest bird fossils in the world. The oldest undisputed sandhill crane fossil is 2.5 million years old (there is a 10-million-year-old fossil that may be a sandhill crane), and sandhill cranes have existed without any significant changes since that time, making them one of the oldest extant bird species around.

Like many other birds, sandhill cranes undergo annual migrations. This often includes 500,000-600,000 individual cranes, rivaling the size of several other mass migrations. Sandhill cranes travel south each winter to warmer lands in the southern US and northern Mexico. The breeding season draws the cranes back north to Alaska, Canada, the northern US, Canada, and even western Siberia each spring.

Once at their breeding grounds, these birds perform elaborate courtship rituals and dances. Sandhill cranes tend to be monogamous, meaning a mating pair will bond for life. If successful, a mating pair will produce 1-3 eggs each year. The baby cranes, known as colts, hatch after a 1-month incubation to begin the cycle anew, continuing an ancient lineage and following in the footsteps of their giant ancestors.
