I had the opportunity to connect with talented designers in New York this past week! It was a great experience to learn about design thinking from industrial designers and visit studios in the area. Thank you @adv_des for organizing the event, and @leadoffstudio for the tour of your new studio!

From completing the Offsite intensive to wrapping up SQ1 this past week, it’s been a full-circle moment.

So grateful for everything I’ve learned and all the talented designers I’ve had the chance to meet and learn alongside. Most importantly, thank you Hector for giving me the opportunity to be part of this amazing community. Forever grateful.

My 5th in person Square One was the perfect combination of all the things I love. Saw 3 Broadway shows (and made a drawing I was able to give to one of my favorite actors), the Iris Van Herpen Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum (literally the coolest exhibit I’ve ever seen and a CMF designers dream), some Taylor Swift landmarks (nothing quite like listening to Cornelia Street while walking Cornelia Street) and of course lots of design friends (loved seeing my friends and Offsiters I had only known online in person for the first time).
As always, I’m so grateful to be a part of the Advanced Design team and can’t wait for next year! @adv_des

This summer, I had a really special opportunity to lead the first ever Offsite Studio course. This is a first-of-its-kind sponsored studio course, offered through @offsite.design I worked with a number of students and helped them craft projects for our studio sponsor, Logitech. They all dove in immediately, crafting their brief which was focused on the prompt of Logitech products for solo entrepreneurs.

I was impressed with the amount of thinking and effort that they all exhibited. Everyone had multiple challenges that they needed to overcome, and I was impressed with how they all iterated, refined, and solicited feedback from me and the class to further tighten up their concepts. The results speak for themselves as well thought out concepts, and our Logitech partners came away impressed with the breadth and depth of their work.

It was an interesting challenge to create a collaborative studio in a remote-only environment. Offsite was started with the vision to bring high quality design education to everyone, no matter where they live. These students came from all over the world, and I really enjoyed seeing how each of them approached their project differently and how we could best engage when we only had video calls to discuss and evaluate their work. I see this class as further evidence that we can continue to push design education and better equip the next generation of designers with the tools they need to excel in the industry.

I really appreciate all the students in the studio, our partners at Logitech, and the @adv_des team and @hectorius_ for putting all of this together.

Offsite Design : Housewares Course • Registration is Open until September 26th.

I’m teaching the 10 Week Housewares course focused on creating useful and thoughtful products for the home. Students will study everyday needs, changing lifestyles, new technologies, accessibility, and sustainability to identify design opportunities. Through research, concept development, and design refinement, students will create original housewares ideas that are practical, relevant, and well resolved. By the end of the course, each student will have developed a strong product concept worthy of inclusion in a professional design portfolio.

What if your next design experience was in Japan? 🇯🇵

Offsite Japan is a 10-week online industrial design program built around Japan Standard Time, with an optional 10 days in Tokyo in November to learn, make and connect in person.

Courses in Digital Tools, Sketching, Methods, Monozukuri and Manufacturing, all taught by working designers. Registration closes September 16.

Good feedback changes the work. Sometimes it changes the designer, too.

Our instructors are working designers. They bring current tools, real tradeoffs, and clear expectations into the studio. They stay close enough to your work to offer useful, specific feedback.

You learn in direct conversation with the profession.

All Offsite Japan courses are virtual, with an optional in-person experience in Tokyo for one to two weeks in November. If you can’t join us in person, no worries—courses will continue virtually as usual.

All courses are also à la carte, so you can choose one, two, or more based on your interests and needs.
