Industrial design education honestly hasn’t evolved much in the last decade. Many schools are still teaching outdated content that doesn’t reflect current trends, emerging technologies, or what the industry actually expects today. Yet tuition at some of the biggest “name brand” design institutions are still high. At some point, you have to ask yourself: are you truly getting the value out of your education that you’re paying for?

So naturally, we started looking at the data from some of these “name brand” institutions to compare where Offsite stands. No, we’re not a fully built-out university—we don’t have campuses, stadiums, sports teams, or massive buildings. But what we do offer is curriculum and programming that directly reflects what many industrial design programs are trying to teach today, often with more current industry insight and accessibility.

So the question becomes… why not Offsite?

Head over to the link in our bio.

Today we celebrate National Industrial Design Day.

Industrial Design is fun, exciting, and always evolving. At times it’s unpredictable—and even unfair—but it’s also deeply creative, visual, and tangible. It’s an experience, a strategy, a point of view; something that can feel abstract while remaining grounded in the real world.

So, how do you define industrial design? ✨ by @adv_des

Lately I’ve been deep-diving into Apple’s soft-goods muscle—the quiet, intentional layer of their ecosystem that so many people overlook. We talk a lot about their hardware, their materials, their finishes, their precision…but their soft goods are just as calculated, just as thoughtful, and honestly, just as beautiful.

And this reflection comes at the perfect time. Apple recently collaborated with Japanese fashion powerhouse Issey Miyake to release the iPhone Pocket, an accessory that feels both surprising and completely inevitable. A lot of people saw this as a “new direction,” but if you know Apple’s history, the Miyake influence has been there for decades—most famously woven into the very identity of Steve Jobs through the iconic Miyake turtlenecks.

This isn’t a random partnership. It’s a continuation of a design dialogue that’s been happening quietly, intentionally, and with purpose. Apple understands the power of soft goods as extensions of the body, of culture, of fashion—beautiful accents that complete the hardware.

Don’t underestimate their intentions. Their execution in this space is only getting stronger, and honestly, it’s exciting to watch.

This summer, I had a really special opportunity to lead the first ever Offsite Studio course. This is a first-of-its-kind sponsored studio course, offered through @offsite.design I worked with a number of students and helped them craft projects for our studio sponsor, Logitech. They all dove in immediately, crafting their brief which was focused on the prompt of Logitech products for solo entrepreneurs.

I was impressed with the amount of thinking and effort that they all exhibited. Everyone had multiple challenges that they needed to overcome, and I was impressed with how they all iterated, refined, and solicited feedback from me and the class to further tighten up their concepts. The results speak for themselves as well thought out concepts, and our Logitech partners came away impressed with the breadth and depth of their work.

It was an interesting challenge to create a collaborative studio in a remote-only environment. Offsite was started with the vision to bring high quality design education to everyone, no matter where they live. These students came from all over the world, and I really enjoyed seeing how each of them approached their project differently and how we could best engage when we only had video calls to discuss and evaluate their work. I see this class as further evidence that we can continue to push design education and better equip the next generation of designers with the tools they need to excel in the industry.

I really appreciate all the students in the studio, our partners at Logitech, and the @adv_des team and @hectorius_ for putting all of this together.

As conference week quickly approaches, we want to take a moment to celebrate someone who has made this year’s SQ1 journey truly special.

Every SQ1 season, we have the opportunity to collaborate with a visual designer who brings their own perspective and vision to the identity of the conference. Over the years, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with Bethany Chan, Chris Ortiz, and Hoang Nguyen—and this year, we’re proud to add Shedrick W. Turner Jr. to that small but mighty list of designers who have shared their talent with us.

Shedrick is a multidisciplinary designer who formerly served as a Human Interface Principal on Apple’s iOS Design Team and as a Product Designer at Nike. Born and raised in Atlanta, his work spans branding, art direction, typography, and digital product, with a career that has taken him across Silicon Valley startups, global brands, and the Stanford University Craft Circle Fellowship. At the heart of it all is a deep curiosity and passion for growth.

Most recently, Shedrick added author to that already impressive list. His new book, Tensegrity: A Guide to Tackling Tension in Creativity, explores the tension we experience as creatives, dreamers, and people navigating the space between who we are and who we are becoming.

We can’t thank Shedrick enough for the care, thought, and vision he brought to this year’s SQ1 Design Conference. He understood the responsibility of shaping the visual identity of this experience and never took it lightly. Before conference week begins, we wanted to make sure we gave Shedrick his flowers and celebrated the person behind the work. Thank you, Shedrick, for helping bring SQ1 to life this year.

We look forward to being with you soon and experiencing some truly life-changing moments together.

Our last speaker is one of our own, Dominic Montante, founder of Amunì, meaning “let’s go” in Sicilian dialect. Built as an experimental design studio without borders, Amunì has traveled around the world, with Dominic’s approach shaped by the people, cultures, and places he encounters, alongside his own Italian and Lao roots.

A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, Dominic has led projects across electronics, furniture, housewares, lighting, and more. Today, Amunì is an internationally distributed team spanning China, Japan, Mexico, and Argentina.

Dominic has also taught Design for Manufacturing at Offsite for the past five years, reinforcing his belief that great design doesn’t stop at the idea—it must be engineered, manufactured, and successfully brought to market.

We look forward to being with you soon and experiencing some truly life-changing moments together.

Our next speaker is Kevin Chee, Director of Design at Craighill, a Brooklyn-based studio that makes objects built to last.

Since 2021, Kevin has helped shape Craighill’s product line around a simple belief: owning fewer, better things can make daily life more meaningful. He leads the design team and works directly with manufacturing partners overseas, taking products from first sketch through tooling and sampling all the way into production.

Before Craighill, he worked in architecture and furniture, and spent time both on the factory floor and in the sales showroom. That range lets him bridge the gap between design intent and what it really takes to make something meant to last a lifetime.

Our next speakers are part of a design panel featuring the Smart Design team and PepsiCo, giving you an inside look at this amazing and unique partnership. We’ll highlight the Smart Design team first. What does a successful partnership between an in-house design organization and an external agency really look like — and where does one team’s role end and the other’s begin? Join leaders from both companies for a candid conversation about the realities of modern design partnerships, told through the lens of their recent collaboration on the SodaStream Fountain.

Panelists will share firsthand perspectives on managing global brand portfolios, navigating fast-moving projects, fostering career growth, embracing emerging technologies, and solving business challenges through design — plus the trade-offs and behind-the-scenes realities that rarely make it into polished case studies. Whether you’re a student, a practicing designer, or a design leader, this is a rare look into both sides of the practice and the shared craft that makes meaningful collaboration possible.
