We’re excited to soft launch Æffect 2025: The Journal of Innovation Management!

Æffect 2025 explores innovation as both affect — the impulses and relationships that spark change — and effect — the transformation that follows.

This year’s theme: Emergence.
Innovation as something living, interconnected, complex, unexpected, and always demanding responsibility, ethics, and care.

Through collective inquiry, four pathways surfaced:
🔹Transform Through Art & Culture
🔹Reimagine Business Through Design
🔹Think Earth Systems
🔹Meet Emerging Technology

The issue opens with a conversation between Course Leaders Jamie Brassett and Mo-Ling Chui, “From Philosophy to Practice,” alongside contributions from MAIM students, faculty, and innovation thinkers across disciplines.
We also present the MAIM 2025 Index of Innovation — a collective glossary shaped over two years of research, projects, and lived experience. First shown as an interactive installation at our June 2025 Showcase, it now lives inside the journal as a snapshot of an ever-evolving field.

Thank you to all our dedicated staff and amazing MAIM class of 2025 for all your hard work, vision, collaboration, creativity and motivation.

The Æffect 2025 team and contributors: Satoko Suzuki, Zhenli Liu, Emily Chu-Yun Lin, Mikito Mikito Morikawa, Ramma Pande, Alejandra Arias Sarria, Yanni Wang, Shuyan Luo, Yusang Zhao, Rajat Kumar, Aino Kannas, Angela Rosario and so many more!

స్వేచ్ఛ (Swechha)

స్వేచ్ఛ is a Telugu word which means liberty which is the power to act and express oneself according to one’s will.

On the occasion of 75years of independent India… we at Typovanam believe that we do have freedom but somewhere we miss having liberty and we celebrate by introducing our Swechha merchandise…
75 years of freedom .. may we have some స్వేచ్ఛ too!

Meet our graduating student Juliana Robilard @jurobilard

Tell us about your background and why you applied for MAIM.
- I started my higher education path in Media Communication Psychology at Kingston University, but soon, I realised I wanted to pursue a career in Design. That led me to BA in Design Management and Cultures @lccdmc at the London College of Communication, where I was first introduced to MAIM during the graduate showcase in 2017. Although I initially postponed my entry for a couple of years, as I wanted to gain work experience as a Designer before joining a Master’s degree, it has always been in the back of my mind that I wanted to do this degree at some point. When the pandemic hit, I thought it would be the perfect time to return to University to pursue a career change that could combine my knowledge in Design and Psychology into Trend Forecast and Social Innovation.

What have you learned from your two years at MAIM? - My most significant learning from MAIM is that dealing with innovation forecasting does not necessarily mean we need to be in control or know everything and that a bit of uncertainty is fine, but that to truly embrace uncertainty, you still need a starting point of reference and to challenge your predisposed bias and assumptions.

What is your favourite project you have worked on during the two years, and why?- I do not doubt that my favourite project has been my personal research. I love research, and combining all my learnings and personal interest in digital culture and behavioural design into my work to analyse digital behaviour within an educational forecast context of hidden curriculums of design schools has fascinated me. Another fun project was @aeffect_innovation which has definitely supported the 2 years MAIM experience.

What are your future plans? - Although I am certain I will one day go back to academia, since the end of the course, I am proud to say you will all be able to find me as a UX Researcher for digital innovation products at Potato AKQA group.

‘We were keen to present the London Transport Museum strategies and shape an exhibition for them to re-open after COVID-19. Aside projects we do in the course, students are incentivised to start our own project. I have joined Aeffect to practice my skills as a project manager.’
