WHY I CANCELLED MY SUMMER SHOWS 🙏

I did something kind of scary last week.😱

I cancelled my next three shows in Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas with the Oddities & Curiosities Expo. 🫥

If you’ve been following along this year, you know I’ve been traveling A LOT. I’ve driven thousands and thousands of miles across the country in my van full of art, setting up my little whimsical world in city after city, meeting so many of you in person. 🚐💨

And I love it.🥰😍🥰

But somewhere between Michigan smoke and San Antonio heat last month, I realized I was running myself into the ground.🫠

My health was suffering. I was burnt out. And after spending so much time driving, loading, unloading, setting up, tearing down, packing, unpacking, and recovering from the road…

I wasn’t making art. 🥺

And when I finally did have time to be in the studio, I was so tired and depleted that I had nothing left to give it. 😞

That part scared me. 😭

Because underneath all the shows, the traveling, the emails, the Instagram posts, the packing and shipping and running a small business…

I am an artist. ✨

And I need time and space to actually be one. 🥲

So I made a decision.

I cleared my calendar for the next eight weeks.

Eight weeks in my studio.😱

Eight weeks to get covered in sawdust and paint again. Eight weeks to follow weird ideas. Eight weeks to make things that don’t exist yet.🤩

And holy 💩 I needed this.

Because there is A LOT coming. 🚨

I’m creating an entirely new body of work for Miami Art Week / Art Basel with @fame.worldwide and @afpagallery, the @armadillobazaar in Austin, and my final four @odditiesandcuriositiesexpo of the year in Denver, Seattle, Portland, and Sacramento 🙌🥳🤩😳🥵🤗

And now for the first time in a long time, I don’t have to immediately pack the van and leave again.

I get to stay here.

I get to make!! 😍

And I already feel something waking back up. 🙏

Thank you all for being here on this journey with me. Thank you Universe for every opportunity to chase my dreams.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got 8 weeks and a lot of wood to cut! 🪚🪵✨

🍰✨The Sacred Cheesecake Offering✨🍰

Swipe through for a look behind the cake layers: details of the finished piece, works in progress, and the May spread from my 2026 calendar, which you may recognize hanging in your space right now! 📅

Built from vintage magazines, rhinestone embellishments, an upcycled frame, and a carefully woven-in article, containing a 1960s prediction confidently explaining why tech-based matchmaking would never catch on. Well, that sure aged like milk 😌

I love incorporating these little cultural time capsules into my work; moments, ideas, and predictions that take on entirely new meanings decades later.

Now for an exciting new chapter...

I’m thrilled to share that ‘ The Sacred Cheesecake Offering’ has been selected for exhibition with @afpagallery at Aqua Art Miami during Miami Art Week this December! 🌴✨

This is a huge milestone for me, and I couldn’t be more excited that this piece will be one of two works making the journey to Miami ☀️

ABOUT THE SHOW

From AFPA Gallery:

In "Earth Speaks," Rachel Rector embraces a slow, elemental approach to image-making, using cameraless photography and historical processes to create works in direct collaboration with nature. Sunlight, water, and organic materials leave their trace, resulting in images that feel both intimate and ephemeral.

This exhibition centers on collaboration rather than control. Rector relinquishes authorship to the elements, allowing nature to imprint and shape each surface—creating works that are at once fragile and enduring, evoking memory rather than documentation.

By blending photography with poetry, collage, and textile elements, Rector expands the medium into a tactile, sensory experience, inviting viewers to pause and reconsider their connection to the natural world.

We are especially grateful to Lauren Allen and The Eclectika Gallery for this meaningful collaboration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Rachel Rector is a fine art film photographer whose work utilizes experimental film, cameraless photography, and historical printmaking techniques to evoke the ethereal, daydream quality of a nostalgic moment in nature. She often adds poetry, collage, and textile elements to her hand-printed photographs to convey the sentiment of the natural space. Her images have been published in Polaroid, Huffington Post, Lomography, Love Watts, Fault Magazine, Something Curated, Structured Mag and displayed in galleries throughout the U.S. Rachel has developed educational workshops believing that teaching 18th century processes like cyanotypes and anthotypes captivate students' senses and encourages them to become more engaged with their environment. She is currently enjoying living in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
