afra eisma’s work is currently in view in Playing House, the Children’s Biennale at the Groninger Museum.

Playing House is about the rules children grow up with, and about the ones worth breaking. The exhibition looks closely at what usually escapes the eye, such as words and images carved into a school desk, an imaginary friend nobody else can see, or a sound that carries more meaning than any sentence could.

Visit Playing House until January 10th, 2027 at Groninger Museum. With works by Mercedes Azpilicueta, afra eisma, Petrit Halilaj, Eva Kot’átková, Lina Lapelytė, sophie serber & Ola Vasiljeva

Afra recovered her swimsuit from the sidewalks where it fell the night before and slapped it on the window of the car which by then is almost like my own cheek. Then against all weather forecast we went looking for the last hot spring dip. By the time we got there the storm was quite heavy but we went into the mud tub anyways. The water was tense and rather cold. We went down to the chin trying to get a bit warmer and poking just from the surface we looked at each other with mud in the face waiting to see who would be the first one to confess to be scared that the storm would go even worse and we wouldn’t be able to get back to Reykjavik in time to catch our plane

“I’m interested in the openness children often have — their ability to invent companions, move fluidly between fantasy and reality, and approach difficult emotions through play” — afra eisma.

🐈 Imagine this: a large, touchable installation, a homely and imaginative world populated by one- and two-headed creatures. Half cat, half human.

🪁 In ‘Playing House. An art biennial with children and young people’, artist afra eisma creates a place for rest, conversation and togetherness for visitors. Her installation of hybrid figures invites you to take off your shoes, sit down beside them and become part of their world for a moment.

🔍 In the second room, you encounter her ‘Warrior Garments’ (2021–), made from a mix of materials and threads and hand-painted with activist texts. The many details and creases make the words hard to read, and some of them, deeply personal, are deliberately half-hidden from view…

These garments are made for a world in which emotions such as rage are not repressed but expressed, and yet, they can be taken off at any time. A reminder that feelings, too, can be carried, and also set aside.

🧦 Come and take your shoes off at ‘Playing House’ to immerse yourself in eisma’s installation, at Groninger Museum.

What a week! We’re coming off an inspiring few days of great conversations, amazing art, and fantastic connections at @nap.plus

A special thank you to everyone who attended our Friends & Patrons tour this past Saturday. It was also a pleasure connecting with international colleagues, including Edwin Otta @accraartweek from Ghana Art Week.

Here is a quick look back at some of some moments!

@nap.plus is officially open, find us in Booth 45, presenting works by afra eisma and Tobias Thaens.

Transformation and the shifting relationship between bodies and the environment associate the artists’ practices through oil painting, ceramics and textile. Thaens’ paintings move between organic forms, camouflage and imagined ecosystems; eisma works across textiles and ceramics to create tactile, immersive worlds that hold both vulnerability and strength. Together, their practices create a dialogue between the intimate and the otherworldly, where colour, material and form become ways of imagining different states of being.

8. Inspiring Exhibition

I finally got a chance to visit Kochi Biennale this year. Its something to experience so much art together all at once. I came from the exhibit wanting to make.

At the biennale, I go to see works of my friends, of artists I have only seen on Instagram so far, got introduced to many new artists and their works. And of course, seeing the work I was a part of at the biennale made it so much more of a special experience for me
