we got the deep brown, morena and moreno skin of our indio ancestors. the truth is, brown skin is filipino too. I got these questions and allegations A LOT throughout my life. I thought that going to the Philippines would be a little bit different- being that “times have changed”. But what is being projected is something that was passed down and still being untaught and decolonized. Filipinos- the good, pretty ones- look a certain way.

ive never taken offense to these questions, I think that they really stem from curiosity. (not gonna lie, some of the kids had me at a loss for words lol)

but as a mother raising mixed black and filipino kids, I have to be ready to educate my kids and be the representation that not everyone is exposed to- filipino or not. I have to show them how to stand in their identity and beauty, unapologetically. (an experience different from mine and unique to them, being that they are mixed. and not just mixed, but mixed BLACK and filipino. yes that’s important and a whole other topic lol)

filipinos aren’t a monolith. no one can tell us what we’re “supposed” to look like 🤎🧜🏾‍♀️🫶🏾🫶🏿I hope the next generation grows up learning that Filipino beauty comes in every shade. (and that people spend a lot of time, money, and even hurt themselves getting burned trying to get our skin color lol)

Follow @iWantMoreLumpia for more! Happy Filipino Food Month!

Pork belly adobo is a popular Filipino stew featuring tender pork belly braised in a savory, tangy sauce made from soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, and peppercorns. Often considered a staple comfort food, it is simmered low-and-slow until the fat renders and the meat is tender, usually served over white rice
