I can’t believe this is my first time at @blackstarfest! What have been doing the last 15 years?! Day 1 was so damn exhilarating. Ran through all the feels from the calming of seeing beloved friends when I walked through the door, the terror of bumbling over my words on my panel, the pride of truly delivering A+ content w/ my mktg peers, the gratitude of working with dope clients, the belonging of a lush dinner with the homies, the utter joyfulness of a very Black and beautiful party, and the full on yumminess of a day well spent. So in loveeee with this space. 🙌🏾

Can’t thank @colorcongress enough for producing this amazing panel BlackStar Film Festival ft the dopest marketers in the doc field (and beyonddd if I do say so myself): @lookylookypictures @afterbruce @cinematropical @littlebigworld.co! Get into the work of #Elev8Docs. 👏🏾

It was exciting to share the Cleveland High School designs with thousands of community members late last month. Alumni, neighbors, and future students were able to see designs of the new school and share their memories about what makes Cleveland unique.

This event was a great cap to 2 1/2 years of engagement with the Cleveland community, including more than 20 planning/design committee meetings, six public workshops, and dozens of focus group meetings with students and staff. Salvage, abatement, and deconstruction will start this summer. Next school year, students will begin learning at Cleveland @ Marshall. Instruction will begin at the modernized Cleveland in fall 2029. What does community engagement look like in design? Our recent community design workshop for the modernization of Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School invited neighbors, business owners, students, parents and faculty to express their thoughts on topics including school placement on site, massing options, circulation, safety, neighborhood impact, and more. Working with @afterbruce as our partner in engagement, we listen, take notes, and then collate all feedback into useful action plans that ultimately translate into a design reflecting a diversity of perspectives.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’re still early in the process, but with each touchpoint we move closer to a reimagined IBWHS that stewards public resources and manifests the values of its namesake.

The next community design workshop will be Jan 21, 1-3pm in the IBW cafeteria—all are welcome!

This is Tracy!

@tracy.nc and I go way back-she’s my sister from another mother.

She has been with Reclamation from the get go and works behinds the scenes.

Tracy likes food. She really likes that our new location is next to @kayosramenbar She thinks Spock is a good girl and is engaged in an ongoing war with Elliot (which is entirely too amusing) In her spare time, she endeavors to be a vegetable. If you give a Tracy a snack she will eat it. Tracy founded @afterbruce and @brownfolksfishing and is a @browngirlsdocmafia board member. She would prefer to throw food parties but will also throw elbows when necessary.

I’m forever grateful Tracy is on our team. She’s saved my ass countless times!

If you see Tracy in the shop, say hello!

The filmmakers behind Happy Birthday, Marsha! (@hbdmarsha)discuss the importance of community building and the power of art and self-care.

.

.”Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera's legacies resound louder than ever before. Best known for their leadership in the early LGBTQ+ rights movement, including the 1969 Stonewall Riots, Johnson and Rivera founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) in 1970, a gay, gender-nonconforming, and trans street activist collective. Members of the group were primarily transfeminine people of color, sex workers, and immigrants. Their work with STAR and beyond created a lineage of radical advocacy and activism that lives on through queer and trans activists fighting for equality today; from the Marsha P. Johnson Institute to the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, these two names will live on forever.

.

Two of the artists we are indebted to for making sure Johnson and Rivera’s stories are heard are Tourmaline @tourmaliiine (f.k.a. Reina Gossett) and Sasha Wortzel , @sashawortzel whose short film Happy Birthday, Marsha! has been screening at film festivals nationwide throughout the year. Through extensive research and interviews with those who knew Johnson and Rivera, the duo created a fictional film depicting the lives of the two many call “the mothers of the movement” for LGBTQ+ rights.
