“It’s gotta be the shoes!” Grateful for the chance to meet Tonya Lewis Lee and Spike Lee as we crossed paths at the Virgin Lounge before the Thanksgiving holiday. When I was a teen, Spike was one of the breakout storytellers, playing roles like Mars Blackmon in She’s Gotta Have It and those unforgettable Nike Air Jordan commercials. Spike writes and directs films that entertain and challenge us; Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, and BlacKkKlansman pushed conversations forward and shaped perspectives in classrooms, living rooms, and conference rooms. While I’ve followed Spike’s work since the ‘80s, I also had the privilege of learning about Tonya Lewis Lee’s work. Tonya has applied her experience as an attorney, producer, author, and entrepreneur to become a powerful advocate for women and infant health in film and public health. Her 2022 documentary, Aftershock, highlights the systemic failures of the U.S. maternal health system, which, as we’ve been reminded in the news and media of the past few weeks, disproportionately endanger the lives of Black women. Spike and Tonya have been married for 31 years, and their body of work is too long to list here—so I’ll include some links in the comments. Chance encounters like this remind me how expressing gratitude plays a role in our lives, connections, and relationships. So, I’m sending a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who uses their authentic experience and voice to spark dialogue and create real impact. And thank you, Spike and Tonya, for being so kind and generous to a fellow traveler who interrupted your breakfast at Heathrow. Happy Thanksgiving!

“Between Two Hands” is an intimate look into midwifery care in Brooklyn, NY. It follows an experienced Black midwife supporting two expecting mothers in her community who give birth outside of a hospital. Black women across socioeconomic backgrounds and life experiences have been subjected to neglect and harm in the broken healthcare system. This documentary attempts to add to the ongoing conversation around the Black maternal mortality epidemic and illuminate a path forward through community-rooted midwifery care. Here are a few posters from documentary films that raise issues around Black motherhood and inspired our project. Slide 1: “Being Serena” (2018) Slide 2: “Aftershock” (2022) Slide 3: “Birthing Justice” (2023) Slide 4: “Black Birth” (2021) Slide 5: “Black Motherhood Through The Lens” (2022) Slide 6: “Listen to Me” (2025)

These men and our journeys are the inspiration behind our free standing birthing centers. America does not recognize true obstetric violence and obstetric racism within their hospitals. Black and Indigenous Birthing people are not surviving labor and are transitioning out of Earth within two weeks of being discharged home. My free standing birthing center will allow birthing people to opt into staying one week prior to one week after postpartum with breakfast, lunch, dinner, Doulas, Midwives, child care, pet care, boats, planes, cars, and more so that the mama can simply focus and look forward to labor. My super adobe will provide their homes if needed to avoid financial stress during the eternal postpartum period. Thank you Jeremy Adom for this motivating capture 📷 @adom_visualshare ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 📽️ @aftershockdoc #birthingpeoplematter #maternalcare #fathersontime #birthjustice #birthingcenter #doulas #midwives #4thtrimester #dadswholift #cars #planes #boats #horses

@bizmacthe3rd is a maternal health advocate, educator, Film Producer, father who founded the @savearose.foundation after the tragic death of his partner, Amber Rose Isaac, during childbirth in April 2020 due to medical negligence. The foundation focuses on addressing systemic flaws in maternal healthcare, particularly affecting Black and underserved communities and redirecting the course of birth equity towards better birthing solutions. Through the @savearose.foundation McIntyre has been instrumental in legislative advocacy, collaborating with birth workers and government officials to craft laws related to maternal and mental health. He has also provided essential resources to families who have experienced similar tragedies. McIntyre’s efforts have garnered national attention. He has been featured in award winning documentaries such the Emmy nominated film @aftershockdoc on @hulu HBO’s Everything’s Gonna Be All White, international Cannes lion award winner for the animated film “impossible journey” and has spoken at various conferences and educational institutions and has taught accredited courses to students and residential learners to raise awareness about racial disparities in maternal healthcare.   As a surviving father to his son Elias, Bruce continues to honor Amber Rose Isaac’s legacy by striving to create a more equitable healthcare system for all. Tonight I attended a screening of @aftershockdoc, a moving documentary about the Black maternal mortality epidemic in the U.S. The film sheds light on systemic racism in healthcare, the disparities in maternal mortality rates (black women are 3x more likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth than white women, and not because of preexisting conditions) and the urgent need for change. In Georgia, we have an opportunity to take action. Senate Bill 307 would require all physicians, regardless of speciality, to complete a one hour unit of continuing education in maternal health every two years. This small step could move the needle to provide basic, life-saving care during this vulnerable stage in a woman’s life. Please join me in calling, texting, and emailing our *state* reps to urge them to support SB 307! #aftershockfilm #blackmaternalhealth #maternalhealthmatters

Just in time for #BlackHeritageMonth, the piece I wrote for the @ucirvine nursing school HUMANITAS Magazine's "Mother & Baby" issue about my maternal grandmother's postpartum death, and the impact of Black maternal morbidity on generations, is now online. Here's an excerpt: "As a Black woman under the care of an all-White staff of doctors and nurses in the segregated South, Grandmama Catherine had no voice on her own care or who would administer it. And there was no legal recourse for her widower, and no justice for the children she left behind—eleven, ten, six, and a newborn less than 24 hours old—a family fractured by loss, profound grief, and my grandfather’s inability to care for their offspring without her. An unhealed wound for generations. "Still, I would find myself having to explain my aversion to, and complete lack of interest in, having children. 'That was such a long time ago!' was the overriding response from those who would ask. Despite suggestions to the contrary, Black birthing women die."
