Another huge highlight from this year's @comic_con: For the first time in its history, San Diego Comic-Con had its own STEAM engagement room where we ran an immersive experience called 'Mission Control' with 65 scientists from @ifthenshecan, @cosplayforscience, @fleetscience, and more. It was amazing to see so many people enjoying hands-on science experiments for their 'astronaut training' and earning badges in medicine, robotics, astrophysics, geochemistry, and other STEM fields.

Mission Control was highlighted in a fantastic video feature on @kpbs and featured as one of the best things at Comic-Con by @sandiegouniontribune.

Special thanks to @steambosssammie and all of the amazing organizations that made this possible. Hope to take this to the next level in 2027!

Another wonderful year at San Diego Comic Con is in the books! The @ifthenshecan STEAM Squad continues to be the most inspiring group of women you could ever imagine. It’s beyond special to get to gather each year, thanks to our fearless leader @steambosssammie 🩷

Our Mission Control STEAM activation went on throughout the whole long weekend and was a huge success! The room was always full of astronaut candidates of all ages who wanted to learn about science and engineering. It was fantastic to see the excitement and engagement 🧠

And our Science of Tom Cruise Movies panel was also a big hit! I was honored to be part of such a fantastic crew of scientists and pilots - I learned a TON and gained even more of an appreciation for the man, the myth, the legend: Tom Cruise.

Plus, Kim Possible was maybe my most recognized character I’ve ever cosplayed, so that was very fun! Good to know she is still beloved by so many 😊

Other highlights included: delivering the quilt coat i made for @afua_bruce, incredible frog and toad cosplayers, the ghost of Joann fabrics, jimothy bag (lots of fellow jimothy fans at comic con!), and of course getting to experience it all with Danny 🩷

Holy batwings, Batman ... I'm returning to @comic_con !And this year is going to be EXTRA special for two reasons. Here's reason number 2:

This year, the @ifthenshecan STEAM Squad is embarking on an exciting partnership with @wetaworkshop to bring fans into the world building process behind some of your favorite films & shows! This is absolutely a full circle moment for me as I am a MASSIVE fan who has been following them ardently since The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001. And now I get to sit next to Richard Taylor on a panel 🥹🤩🤯

Will I utterly #fangirl out, or can I keep myself cool, calm, and collected? You'll just have to come to the panel (or view it online) to find out! 😉🤓

From a $10 handmade thrift store quilt into a handmade jacket! I love giving a quilt a second life, and I love making things for my friends 🩷

This time, the little baking motif on one of the fabrics made me think of my friend @afua_bruce (a brilliant computer engineer & author, as well as a baker in her free time) so I made this coat for her 🍰

I used the Flora Jacket pattern by @brightsidefabricco - it’s such a versatile pattern and I’m so happy to now have it in my stash 🌸

I also tried using plastic drop cloth from the hardware store to trace my pattern pieces so that I can reuse any of the sizes of the pattern without having to re-print it. A tip I saw on IG recently and have now used several times 🙌

When I’m not sewing, I’m a computer scientist, and both Afua and I spend a lot of our time doing educational outreach. We will both be part of a crew of women in STEM from @ifthenshecan taking on San Diego comic con later this month. We’ll be on a bunch of panels about how science & tech intersect with pop culture. There are some REALLY exciting topics and collaborations this year! We’ll be announcing all the panels in the next few days, so stay tuned 👀

Afua, I’ll see you in a few weeks ☀️I hope you will save some room in your suitcase to bring this home with you from comic con! (Or we can always ship it 😂)

This was another great year for the 6th grade Women in Science project. We had 30 student presentations and a 67% response rate from the scientists we reached out to. Students learned about the many different fields of science that women are making a difference in, as well as the hurdles they have faced along their journeys.
