Slow yourself down. It’s not a race. It’s not a competition. This has taken me five decades to figure out. I’d say I fall into the category of high achieving over-thinker, a distinction that has brought me some success but whose strategies do not depend on slowing down! Like many of us, I was raised with an emphasis on achievement which required perseverance, stamina, focus, determination, and calculated risk taking - all admirable qualities. But achieving also implied competition, aka: getting ahead of the next guy! Getting ahead depended on speed, performance and winning for which you were acknowledged and awarded. Anything short of winning carried the implied weight of failing. While failure was something to be learned from, taking time to slow down and reflect was not typically taught nor modeled by the culture that raised me. You just got back on the horse and carried on. Go, go, go before you lose your step. I’m not opposed to speed or achievement. In fact, I admire those who excel beyond the norm. It’s just that I realize now that slowing down is also ok. In fact, slowing down can be the critical factor to forward propulsion and goal attainment. I like how Carl Honoré frames this: “In a world addicted to speed, slowness is a superpower.” The beloved fable of The Tortoise and The Hare taught me at a young age the value of slow and steady, yet when I entered adulthood I forgot this wisdom and found myself caught on the unforgiving treadmill. I’ve learned that when I allow myself to embrace my “Inner Tortoise” 😂 🐢, I give myself space to become more aware, to feel, and to make more conscious choices for myself. At first, the slower pace felt uncomfortable. I wasn’t used to it. I worried I’d fall behind or miss out. But with patience and practice I found that taking my time opens me up to infinite possibilities. I began to see everything as an opportunity for growth. I experienced more peace, calm, and fulfillment. @slowyourselfdown 📷 @photosbyizzyo #infinitepossibilities #carlhonoré #inpraiseofslow #slowmovement #whyimeditate
