Our Spotlight of the Week is Wesley Doll! Wesley is a 3rd‑year Agriculture and Extension Education major who works and lives at the Penn State Dairy Barns.

Here’s what Wesley has to say about his experience: “I am one of eight students to live at the Penn State Dairy while also working there. Students can learn to complete all jobs vital to making a commercial dairy operate day to day including milking, feeding, bring cows to be milked, and scraping manure. We also do other tasks on a less frequent schedule like putting sand in the beds, vaccinations, cleaning and preparing materials. I love the hands-on learning opportunities, the routine physical labor, the full-time employees and the sense of accomplishment of starting work at 5:00am and having worked a full 8 hour day by the time many wake up; and above all my awesome roommates who make every day so fun and a house enjoyable to come home to.”

🐞[seminar blog] Scientists are discovering that predators can influence their prey in more ways than just direct consumption. Dr. Sara Hermann, Associate Professor in the Department of Entomology at Pennsylvania State University, stopped by the University of Maryland to share her research into non-consumptive effects to manage green peach aphids. For more on Dr. Hermann’s novel approach to pest management check out seminar blog, 'You smell like you might eat me! How ladybeetle stink can fix your aphid problems.' 🐞

Opening-day recap!! And a huge thank you to our patrons, donors, volunteers, and club members. We couldn’t do it without everyone doing their part to keep the show running, and it’s truly amazing to see all of the hard work everyone has been putting in fully realized during opening day. Today was an astounding success and testament to the work and dedication of everyone who’s been involved.

We would also like to take the time to again recognize Professor Jim Savage, to whom this year’s show was dedicated. Professor Savage has been a part of the Department of Plant Science at Penn State for 40 incredible years of service. He is not only well-accomplished but also well-loved and appreciated by his students and fellow faculty. In addition, he played an integral part in this year’s show, stepping up and serving as interim Club Advisor while Dr. Margaret Hoffman was away.

We are looking forward to another very successful day, as we are still open tomorrow from 9:00am-4:00pm. There’s still plenty of plants to go, we hope to see you there!! 🌱🌱

🍁 Preparation for our 112th annual Horticulture Show is well underway! Our dedicated Hort Show Managers have been busy driving around picking up plants, hard goods, props, and machinery for this year’s show. So far, we’ve been working on plant inventory and pricing, watering, mulching, and preparation for a long day of hardscaping. 🪴 🧱

Club Members: We are at the Ag Arena every day this week for setup, so come on out and get some great hands-on experience and volunteer hours! We have a general body meeting at 6:00 on Wednesday, October 14th at the Ag Arena. It’ll be all hands on deck!
