Ahchipaptunhe (Lawrence Baker)
“Day a Blue Jay Dreamt of Being a Raccoon”
Cyanotype Print

This artwork reflects on Lenape oral traditions and was featured in a dual-exhibition titled Modern Messages: Ahchipaptunhe and Jacob A. Meders. The core conceptual premise behind this piece focuses on acceptance and celebration. By highlighting the whimsical, shape-shifting premise of the title alongside the translucent, layered imagery of the figures, the work explores themes of honoring different perspectives, dreams, and states of being without judgment. @ahchipaptunhe

We designed this stunning piece in a Painters Place original, closed cornered white shadowbox frame. Our client wanted the work to resemble how it was displayed at the gallery in Scottsdale Arizona, so we procured miniature white clothing pins to attach the shear over print onto a piece of twine in front of the cyanotype to create that blurred effect we see in the photos. Protecting the print is Optium Museum Acrylic, which is 99.9% UV protection, shatterproof, scratch resistant, half the weight of glass, and non-glare. @truvueglazing

The Miracle of Tomorrow

Wanted to share in process video of a new work. This originally was developed on newsprint with attributes of collage, color pencil, and oil pastels. From that initial idea I have brought it over into this painting I do not require myself to be precious with the marks or hold myself to copy the original concept, but instead to hold to the original feeling and movement of the sketch.

When I got my studio space I wasn’t sure what I would do with it. Six years later here are some memories. My favorites? Open studios. Sharing work I had not seen together for years. The quiet times.
Will be posting a few series: photos of the buildings and the crazy right to life Christian cement plant, MMIW installation, curating Under All is the Land, showing my ceramics art from the 80’s, showing Sometimes I Shoot Like A Girl from my MoMA moment. Hosting friends like Ceil Diskin.
Always remember, things have to end before a new chapter can start. I never fear moments like this - they’re liberating.

When in high school one of my favorite summer escapes was visiting the Storm King art center those giant bright red constructions by Mark di Suvero were imprinted in my heart. In this painting and paper sculpture Ive created is an example of how that foundational memory has become support structure that holds up thoughts of cubism, color theory and abstraction.

One of the red structural supports I let run past the top as an example of not being contained but instead as a line that will continue on.

Artist Statement:
“In 1524, when Giovanni da Verrazzano entered a harbor near Manahatta (Manhattan), my Lenape ancestors paddled out in their mùxula (canoes) to guide him safely ashore. This moment of exchange—of symbols, language, and culture—marks a lineage of communication through line, plane, and form. My work emerges from this intersection of geometric abstraction, modernism, and Indigenous histories, preserving these exchanges through a visual narrative. By engaging rigorous formal investigation, I reclaim geometric language as an inherently Native practice, positioning Indigenous artistic traditions as parallel sophistications to, rather than precursors of, modernist abstraction.

My geometric works often engage ideas common to Western art histories, such as sacred geometry and numerology, but reframed through a Lenape lens. I draw meaning from the three sisters—corn, squash, and beans—the four directions, and the sacred numbers 12 and 24, reflective of the scutes of the Eastern Box Turtle, and other integral numbers to Lenape ceremonies. Each composition carefully situates these histories and sacred elements in plain sight; yet without the Lenape voice, their significance risks being lost.

My practice is devoted to carrying forward Lenape histories, cultures, and customs—centering Indigenous knowledge and returning ownership of our narratives to Lenape people. As a member of the federally recognized Delaware Tribe of Indians, I am honored to carry our culture, language, and traditions back to our ancestral homelands of Lenapehoking.”
