CSUSB student Enid from abroad in Mexico City with Prof. Nicole Scalissi:
Today, we visited Tlatelolco. This location is important because in 1968, Mexico hosted their first Olympics. This was a big deal, it was the first time a Latin American country had been able to become a host of the games. The Mexican government started to arrange projects to clean up Mexico City for foreign visitors and become “Los Juegos de la Paz” or the “Games of Peace.” In the background of these clean-ups, peaceful protests started to arise. They were students from the university that believed the Institutional Revolutionary Party only catered to the wealthy rather than aiding the working class. As well as the President at the time being equivalent to a monarch, where the government controlled everything. At the latest protests, which was 10 days before the games, plain clothes police were hiding within the crowd and opened fired to hundreds of peaceful protesters.

Prof. Mya Dosch started the tour in the Plaza of the Three Cultures, where located in it is a monument created for the 25th anniversary of the massacre. This monument unfortunately only has 20 names of the fallen people and on the other side it has a song by Daniel Molina, "Canto de Amor a Tlatelolco." After seeing the monument, we were able to visit inside the 1968 Memorial Museum. The museum was laid out to where there is two passes to travel through. One side being more about the events in 1968 and the other discussion of repression, control, and violence. Mentioning gender equality, fertility, LGBTQ in Mexico, as well as the conflicts on the Mexican-American borders.

There was a lot in this museum that is still relevant in today's world, where many of us from California and the United States in general can relate. As a Mexican American myself this hits home, we are seeing many things in history that are repeating itself with current political conflicts that are occurring.

CSUSB student Enid, from abroad in Mexico City with Prof. Nicole Scalissi:

In the Museo de Arte Popular, @map_mexico, they showcase multiple folk art from different Mexican artists. In one of the showrooms, I came across a carved wooden statue, the Perra Echada, which translates to the Laying Dog and made by Jacado y Maria Angeles workshop. Who are located in San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca.

The Perra Echada has a gray and gold coding, covered with black and white elegant, extravagant patterns like many other Tonas and Nahuales representations

Tonas and Nahuales are animal spirits important to Oaxaca and Zapotec culture. Tonas are the protectors and guardians given to an individual at birth. In Zapotec tradition, one way the Tona was assigned was for the father of the newborn to create a circle of Salt around their house and depending on the footprints appearing in the circle, determines which Tona animal the baby would inherit. They originally were carved small from wood to be created as a necklace for the newborn to wear. Tonas were also often depicted as lizards, deers, rabbits, monkeys, jaguars, and dogs like the Perra Echada in the museum.

Nahuales are more complex, they can be referred to the Tona itself, but with a deeper representation. Nahuales are composed of three elements of nature: symbolizing conception, governing the birth, and the purpose of the individual's existence, which protects and guides an individual along the way. They are often depicted differently from Tonas animals spirits, some being frogs, fishes, coyotes, and mockingbirds.

Both Tona and Nahuales are commonly connected to Alebrijes. The brightly colored, fantastical animals sculptures used for los Dias de Los Muertos or the Day of the Dead and in Mexican folk art.
