“The Vocals of the Chaotic Burst” draws inspiration from Spiralism, a Haitian literary and artistic movement of the late 1960s that embraces chaos and a non-linear sense of time and experience. The work also references Ready to Burst (Mûr à crever, 1968) by Frankétienne, a founder of Spiralism, who published the novel under the Papa Doc regime.
At the start of the Duvalier era, Frankétienne joined Haïti Littéraire and, unlike many artists forced into exile, remained in Haiti, resisting through his writing and publishing over forty books. Born April 12, 1936, in Ravine-Sèche, he passed away February 20, 2025, in Delmas, Port-au-Prince. He received international recognition, including being named Commandeur of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2010), was called a “father of Haitian letters” by The New York Times (2011), and most recently represented Haiti at the São Paulo Biennial (2025).
This show would not have been possible without the support of Opal DeRuvo and Maria Elizabeth, who assisted with engineering, installation, and material aspects of the walls and printing process. Special thanks to Dusty Childers for creating the timeline that guided the execution and organization of the project.
We are grateful to Ibitisam Zaman, Mahogany, Isabel, Jetamie, Chiffon Thomas, Lily Ahree Siegel, and Natasha, who worked on weaving, carving, printing, and laying the ball chain to create the wall. Additional thanks to Hervé Sabin, Tomm El-Saieh, Central Fine  and Marie Andree Etienne, who helped bring Frankétienne’s work to Paris, as well as Peggy Leboeuf, Melissa Timarchi, Olivia Samios, and Perrotin Paris for their support.
It is a special honor to have Dr. Rachel Douglas BA(Hons), MSc, PhD and Dr. Patrick Sylvian MFA, PhD for contribute writings for the show.
Finally to everyone who came to the preview and opening. 🌀🌀🌀🌀🌀
