What a wonderful film festival MIFF @melbfilmfest has been bringing SILENCED to its Melbourne audience. So proud of this team, and endlessly in awe of @brittanyhiggins___ and @suigenerisjen @catalinapordios and @amberheard who trusted us in making this film.
I also loved sharing a moment with powerhouse director @selinamiles to talk about our craft. The needle won’t shift if we don’t keep talking about it - see you in cinemas September 3. Big shout out to @blayke_hoffman for being the amazing person you are ✨

On Friday I had the privilege of attending @aidcmelb Regionality conference in Maroochydore, Queensland. Thanks to my dear ol' friend and colleague @zerodivide.productions for informing me of its occurrence 🙏

A day filled with inspiring talks, very useful information, regardless of where in the world you might be based, and wonderfully heartfelt reconnections with my Australian screen colleagues and dear dear friends ❤️

Thank you for having me. In a week I'll be travelling back to my darling Europe. In my suitcase back, I'll have some golden nuggets of insight from the Australian screen industry that I'm sure @lovisalundgrn and I will be taking into account in our journey ahead 🎬📽️🎞️

Working at AIDC (Australian International Documentary Conference) was such a fun experience. Working along side the Melbourne team, I enjoyed learning from the variety of insightful sessions and how documentaries are shaping our future in Australia and the greater audience. #aidc #sunshinecoastscreencollective #filmsunshinecoast #regionalityaus

With blockbuster documentaries like FREE SOLO and THE RESCUE in her filmography (two films I truly adore), it’s no surprise that CHAI VASARHELYI is leading this year’s REGIONALITY SUNSHINE COAST with a keynote talk called Limitless Filmmaking!

In an exclusive interview leading up to the event on August 7, I got to talk with Chai about how she pursued documentary filmmaking early in her career, and how her life experience helped her observe life from a unique perspective.

Check out the full interview now at @novastreamaus 🎟

PART TWO of the first 6 months of the year:

72 hours in Melbourne, Australia, with one of my bestie sister friends @ritaamal

Rita was a Guest and Headline speaker for @aidcmelb - Australian International Documentary Conference - speaking to a packed room of fellow documentarians, it was mesmerizing watching her talk about incredible body of award winning work and new documentary.

A proud moment for me!

Living with Rita for almost 10 years in LA, I witnessed first hand and learnt about hard work, discipline, creative tenacity and being brave to follow your instincts.

Of course I had to take her for a glass of local Australian wine at one of my favourite Melbourne wine bars @citywineshop

Last shot is an EXHAUSTED Rita doing her make up half dead, but, still turning up for her Doc community. 😂

8020 are proud to be working with Australian International Documentary Conference (@aidcmelb) on the publicity of Regionality Sunshine Coast, a one-day screen industry event designed to support and elevate documentary and factual practitioners in regional South East Queensland.

The inspiring one-day program will provide exclusive insights into crafting compelling feature documentaries that connect with audiences, tips for how to thrive in the current financing and monetisation environment, expert advice on successful series creation, and a look at navigating a nonfiction career that defies genres and formats.

Leading the program is the Academy Award®-winning co-director of Free Solo, Chai Vasarhelyi, she will join the event with an exclusive session on documentary filmmaking.

If you've got a story burning to be told, this one's for you!

Sharing a week late because my processor was overloaded and needed to be turned on and off. @visionsdureel was spectacular as ever. It was extra special this year: I returned in a new role (director) and that, too, with my incredible team of collaborators and Best Pitching Buddies aka @riham.ezzaldeen @dom_at_bellota @gianlumata @ludaycrous who kept things interesting and always supportive af. And @edityyycutsdeep whose stellar work with the ✂️ made a big impact. We won a couple of awards which really does validate us NGL so thank you @docassociationeu and @aidcmelb for your encouragement- can’t wait to visit Oz with Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

P.S. A warm thank you to @sabine.fc and the Industry team for getting us through a gruelling week with ease. And everyone who helped through this otherwise commodifying process that risks being transactional (I know it’s an industry but HEY). Nyon is a really great place to present a film without feeling flattened into a ware.
