From New York to Shanghai, TM’s lighting practice spans the globe. In Shanghai, TM designed the lighting for the reimagined atrium at Xintiandi, one of the city’s defining destinations. Xintiandi is rooted in Shikumen, an architectural style that has defined Shanghai since the 1860s. Known for serene gardens enclosed within their walls and the energy of the streets, Shikumen architecture brings together two distinct qualities that are especially evident at Xintiandi. Designed by @aimarchitecture, the atrium blurs the line between interior and exterior. An original skylight, once partially closed, has been opened as much as possible to bring in light and life. As daylight fades, TM’s lighting keeps the greenery and trellis glowing, maintaining the feeling of a covered oasis in the heart of Shanghai. Architecture by @aimarchitecture

How does a photography museum become part of daily life in a young city? At @fotografiska.shenzhen , seeing an exhibition is only the beginning. Daylight pours into the galleries. By night, music, dinner, and gatherings take over. A single visit stretches from sunlight to starlight. Art slips into the city’s rhythm from day to night. Following Fotografiska Shanghai, @aimarchitecture returns for a second collaboration with Fotografiska, this time working within Shenzhen’s new urban fabric and architectural conditions. DECO speaks with Christian Devillers, Managing Director of Fotografiska China, and Vincent de Graaf, co-founder and principal architect of AIM Architecture, about image, space, and city life. Together they explore how a museum and a young city watch each other, and grow side by side. Seth Powers (@sethpowersphoto)

The concrete cassette ceiling, the structural columns, the original staircase: AIM Architecture left the existing building visible and worked around it. On Huaihai Road, one of Shanghai's busiest commercial streets, the fourth ZARA store the studio has built for the brand runs across five levels of a converted commercial building, each one holding a different atmosphere — a raw warehouse space, an art-gallery setting, a craft atelier, a top-floor room styled like a Shanghai loft. At the entrance, a brick podium spills out toward the pavement and works as seating, steps, and display at once. At the rear, a glazed spine carries the escalators, so by evening the people moving between floors read from the street as silhouettes against the facade. The long narrow floor plates that made the building difficult became the reason to keep moving through it. a retail interior adopts the logic of an art storage facility, transforming the act of shopping into a process of retrieval and discovery, where products are accessed through shelves, storage racks, and archive-like displays. organized around a warehouse-inspired staircase, the project dissolves the distinction between storage and exhibition, allowing circulation and display to operate as a single system. raw materials and exposed infrastructure reinforce the atmosphere of a working archive, presenting products as objects to be uncovered beyond conventional merchandising — | design: AIM Architecture | project: HARMAY Beijing Hopson One | location: Beijing, China | photos: Seth Powers @aimarchitecture — 🕵🏼 @vestigare_ is an architectural investigation archive. we seek projects that instigate and provoke. ✉️ send us your project: contact@vestigare.com.br
