Spyro Sunday’s back, and this week we’re going handheld: Spyro: Season of Ice for the Game Boy Advance!

This was the first handheld Spyro game I ever played, back when I was only 7 or 8 years old, and it still makes me smile every time I pull it off the shelf.

Here’s the fun part: this was the first Spyro ever released on a handheld, AND the first Spyro on a Nintendo system. Spyro on a Nintendo? It really happened, and they ended up making a lot more over the years on them.

The story cracks me up too. A careless wizard curses himself with a massive headache, and the cure is the wings of 100 fairies. Of course it’s Spyro and Sparx to the rescue!

What was your first handheld Spyro game?

I never thought I’d be writing this. BioWare is being shut down, and I’m honestly gutted.

Most of my favorite games came from this studio, and Dragon Age is the one that means the most to me. It’s not just the gameplay. It’s the entire world.

Thedas is a dark, messy fantasy world that feels like it existed long before you showed up and will keep going after you leave. The story pulls you in and doesn’t let go, the lore runs deep, and every choice carries weight. Then there’s the companion system and the party gameplay. Your companions aren’t just a squad, they’re characters you actually care about, and building a party around them is half the fun.

It’s the same way I feel about the Elder Scrolls series. Elder Scrolls will always be my top series, and Dragon Age comes right after it. That’s how much these games matter to me.

They shaped the kind of gamer I am as an adult. When I look at the games I’m drawn to now, so much of it traces back to these worlds.

So I’m going back to the beginning. Dragon Age: Origins on PS3, this time for the platinum. I unlocked every single achievement in Origins and Dragon Age II on Xbox 360 back in the day, so I know exactly how long this road is. I’m doing it again anyway.

Playing it feels like the right way to say goodbye.

Thank you to everyone who ever worked at BioWare. Your stories mattered, and they’re staying right here on my shelf.

What’s your favorite BioWare game? I’d really like to hear it.

We’re at the end of the Harry Potter movie games for #31daysinthecrypt! Today is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Part 2 on PS3, side by side! They’re two different games, one for each half of the final story.

Part 1 plays like a third-person shooter, with a spell wheel, cover, and stealth sections under the Invisibility Cloak. Part 2 is more linear, with spells on the face buttons, an Apparate move for Harry, and PlayStation Move support.

Did you play these when they came out?

Calling out my lifelong best friend @captain_cold25 again for dragging me into #31daysinthecrypt, which was created by @king_lizzard and @_lachrymal. Day 6 is here!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is my double for today, with the PS2 and PS3 versions together. Both have the same story and the same Hogwarts, but the PS3 one has the sharper graphics and the PS2 one is a lower-quality version of the same game. The back of each case also promises playable fights as Sirius and Dumbledore against Lucius, Bellatrix, and Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic.

The darkness in this one builds slowly. Umbridge’s blood quill detentions, Harry’s nightmares of Voldemort, and then the Ministry, where Sirius dies and Voldemort tries to take over Harry’s mind. This story is a big reason I love the darker side of Harry Potter!

Five days in and still going with #31daysinthecrypt! Shoutout to @captain_cold25, my lifelong best friend, for pulling me in, and to @king_lizzard and @_lachrymal for starting it all.

Today is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire for the PS2, and this is where the story turns deadly. Harry’s name comes out of the Goblet of Fire even though he never entered, and suddenly he’s competing in a tournament that has killed champions before. A dragon, the freezing depths of the Black Lake, and a twisting enchanted maze are waiting for him.

But the real horror comes at the end, in a graveyard. Cedric Diggory is killed the moment they arrive, and Harry is tied to the headstone of Voldemort’s father. Voldemort’s return needs three things: the father’s bone, taken from the grave right behind Harry, the flesh of a servant, which Wormtail gives by cutting off his own hand, and the blood of his enemy, forced from Harry with a dagger. Then Voldemort rises from the cauldron, and the Death Eaters gather around him. I absolutely love how evil and dark this part of the story is!

In the game you play as Harry, Ron, and Hermione across a set of levels, with the tournament challenges in between. You can team up with up to two friends if you have a multitap, and combining your spells makes them more powerful.

Day 4 of #31daysinthecrypt with my lifelong best friend @captain_cold25! Thanks again to @king_lizzard and @_lachrymal for starting this trend.

Today’s pick is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for the PS2, and this one is personal. This is my actual copy from when I was a kid, it’s quite beat up! It’s also my favorite Harry Potter story of all time, and it fits spooky season perfectly.

Everything changes in Azkaban. The first two stories were lighthearted, but this is where the series turns dark. A murderer named Sirius Black escapes the wizard prison, and everyone believes he’s coming for Harry. To keep him out, the dementors are sent to guard Hogwarts. They drain every happy thought out of you, and the Dementor’s Kiss can suck out your soul. They’re creepy and demonic, and I absolutely love them.

The only real defense is the Patronus charm, powered by a happy memory. I loved how it was introduced, a bright light pushing back against something cold and empty.

In the game you play as Harry, Ron, and Hermione and switch between them whenever you want. Harry can jump across gaps and use the Marauder’s Map, Ron can search bookshelves, and Hermione has the most spells. You also get to ride Buckbeak and fend off dementors in the air, and in the final fight you charge up Harry’s Patronus.

Day 3 of #31daysinthecrypt with my lifelong best friend @captain_cold25! Thank you to @king_lizzard and @_lachrymal for starting this trend.

Same year, same title, two different games! Here are the PS1 and PS2 versions of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. They were made by different studios and the gameplay is quite different, so they’re both worth having in a collection.

The PS1 game builds on its Sorcerer’s Stone predecessor with new mini-games and Floo Powder travel, and the PS2 game adds a free-flight broom mode, Vari-Power spells, and stealth.

Was able to grab this wonderful piece of nostalgia, with the freebie Astrobot too.

@lego has outdone themselves again, with the beautiful @playstation 1 console. Im really looking forward to building this one, with my daughter building Astro for me.

Will you be getting it?

250 physical games. Just crossed that line with this stack, and it feels like the right time to finally jump on #stackattack. eBay auctions are basically my hobby within the hobby at this point 😅 Shelf’s growing, so is everything else around here — stay tuned for some big updates 👀 Tales of Graces f Remastered is calling my name first — JRPGs always win. Drop your current stack in the comments, I want to see what everyone’s collecting!

Spyro Sunday’s back, and this week we’re pulling out the black sheep of the franchise: Enter the Dragonfly for PS2, complete in box.

This one has a reputation. After Insomniac wrapped up the original trilogy on PS1, Universal handed the series to a new studio under a brutal deadline — and what came out the other side was infamous for bugs so bad, some players could stumble into the final boss less than a minute into a new save file. I actually just tested the bug out today - it absolutely works, and you can glitch right into the final fight in 60 seconds!

It still belongs on the shelf though. You can’t be a Spyro collector and tell the story without the lowest point.

Where do you land — worth revisiting for the nostalgia, or better left alone?

Turns out I have a Kingdom Hearts blind spot I didn’t know about. 😱 I never owned a DS, so I never played 358/2 Days or Re:Coded when they originally released — and apparently I also never got around to watching the HD cutscene versions included in the ReMIX collections either. Two decades in this series and somehow both of these completely slipped past me.

So today I laid back, relaxed, and finally watched the story I’d been unknowingly skipping since day one. 🖤

And with the Kingdom Hearts Collection dropping October 8th, it feels like perfect timing to finally be all caught up.

Who else is excited for the new collection release?

A couple of you DM’d after the last Spyro post asking for more from the collection — so here’s one I’ve been sitting on. The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon for PS3, complete copy, case and manual included. This one is my favorite of the TLOS series, with a deeply emotional (and romantic) story that I have no shame in admitting brought a tear to my eye at the end. Spyro and Cynder are so cute together 🖤

Here’s the fact that makes this one special: it’s the only Spyro game ever released on PlayStation 3. Every other Spyro title, before or since, stayed on PS1, PS2, GameCube, or the newer PlayStations. If you need a good copy of this today, you’re paying 3 digits!

You asked, more is coming. What would you like to see off the shelf next?
