POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We built a little nature center. 😭💚

Last night, the Urban Ecology Creative Center welcomed its first 55 visitors at the LA River Farmers Market!

What started as a little idea has become a traveling space for exploring urban nature through art, science, curiosity, and community.

And I couldn't have done it alone.

This carousel is a little love letter to the people who helped bring the UECC to life, and to everyone who stopped by to make prints, explore specimens, ask questions, share stories, or just hang out.

I wanted to create a space where you don't have to be a scientist, an artist, or even particularly interested in nature to belong. Where the things we encounter in our everyday lives are worth wondering about, and where everyone's experiences have something to contribute.

Yesterday, I got to watch that happen. 🥹

We're just getting started. Thank you for building this with me.

Even after years of neglect and recent vegetation removal, Madrid continues to function as urban habitat. Community scientists have documented more than 120 species in the park and immediately adjacent San Gabriel River corridor. People continue to use the space informally, too: cyclists resting in the shade along the San Gabriel River bike path, workers eating lunch or taking a nap in their cars, neighbors passing through, and people simply finding somewhere green to exist.

No matter how you approach it, a park definitely beats yet another warehouse.

We are asking the Mountain View School District Board of Education to:

•Reject development proposals that would eliminate or substantially reduce Madrid Park.
•Reject future tenants proposing data centers, data-center-supporting infrastructure such as large-scale BESS, or other industrial uses that could create significant environmental burdens.
•Preserve Madrid Park as public greenspace and pursue a long-term future that restores and protects it.

That's a lot for a little 2.7-acre park.

Madrid Park may be small, but Madrid Park matters.

Please sign the petition and help us protect the park and restore what's left.

My new friend Shou hosted a potting up party this morning for Mugwort and Fuschia. It was wonderful to see his set up and learn more about his techniques. Shou has a productive backyard nursery where he grows exclusively California native plants, and then distributes them for free at community events in the SGV. He spends countless hours and his personal finances on this vital endeavor. Thank you Shou for being a gatebreaker in the native plant world, and sharing your knowledge so freely with others. A true leader, and example of what just one person with deep passion and hustle can do.

3rd Annual Mid-Autumn Nature Walk Recap🌿🥾

The Habitat Authority partnered with the Rowland Heights Chinese Association for the 3rd Annual Mid-Autumn Nature Walk in Powder Canyon! Together, we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival by connecting with nature, community, and traditions that bring us together. 💚

As we chased the moon along the trail, we were reminded of the full moon’s symbolism of reunion, togetherness, and good fortune. And what better sign of good luck and prosperity than spotting a deer along the trail!

A special thank you to the lion dance team for bringing the celebration to life with their wonderful performance and engaging with participants on the trail.

Thank you to all the participants and volunteers who came out to celebrate with us. We’re grateful to the Rowland Heights Chinese Association for helping make this event possible, and to our new event partner, @ainicalifornia, for generously providing free California native plants and encouraging the community to grow native at home.

It was a beautiful morning filled with nature, culture, community, and a little extra good luck!
