The light wasn't interesting. The colours were.

A simple photograph of these wildflowers would have felt too ordinary, but the mix of yellow, blue and green caught my attention. So instead of photographing the flowers as they were, I used ICM to work with their colours and shapes.

I'm still surprised by how many different wildflowers I find close to home.

There's something to be said for going against the idea of chasing light. Not because it isn't one of the best things a photographer can do, but because photography is so deeply connected to who I am. If it's meant to be therapeutic, if it's meant to give me the opportunity to separate myself from the noise of daily life, then the one thing I could never do is force it.

I don't want to make myself be somewhere at a specific time just because the light is supposed to be better. Every once in a while I'll chase light, and that's usually assignment-based. But when I'm shooting for myself, I photograph what I naturally come across. I refuse to push myself away from a place of comfort just to create a photograph. To me, that goes against everything that makes the medium therapeutic in the first place.

With that comes risk. It creates a disconnect with whatever film happens to be sitting inside my camera. Hazy skies, harsh shadows, muted hues, and grain that doesn't quite hold together are all things I expect when I get my scans back. These are the B-sides. The throwaways. The frames that, if I had only waited a few hours, might have become what they were "supposed" to be.

But they aren't. And that's completely okay.
