Another year at the #1 anesthesiology meeting in the world, and another reminder that our greatest impact happens when we come together. 🩺✨

The annual Anesthesiology Meeting is more than a conference. It’s an opportunity to exchange groundbreaking innovation, share research, advance best practices, and collectively shape the future of our specialty and the patients we serve.

Beyond the science, there’s something special about reconnecting with my current and longtime anesthesiology family, building new relationships with like-minded people, and finding community in the shared passion that brought us all here. 🤝🏾

This year in San Diego was especially meaningful. Grateful for the opportunity to:
- Recieve distinctions in our submitted medically challenging case
- Represent DC as a delegate at the Resident House of Delegates.
- Mentor high school students and help introduce the next generation to the possibilities within medicine.
- Reconnect, build new relationships, and enjoy everything San Diego had to offer along the way! 🌴☀️

Every opportunity has been a reminder that you can’t pour into a community you never show up for. Whether it’s medicine, education, fitness, advocacy, or whatever sets your soul on fire, get involved! Build connections, share what you know, learn from others, and reinvest in the communities that helped shape you.

Because the goal isn’t just to make it into the room. It’s to help make the room bigger for someone else. 🖤

✨ WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT ✨

From studying public health at Johns Hopkins to returning as a Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair for Health Outcomes, Dr. Adam J. Milam’s journey has come full circle. 🤎

His career has taken him across the country, from residency at Cedars-Sinai to fellowship at Cleveland Clinic and a professorship at Mayo Clinic Arizona. Today, he is back at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, combining his expertise in anesthesiology and public health with his passion for improving health outcomes and addressing disparities in Baltimore.

For the past three years, his locs have represented two things: self-expression and freedom.
When asked what advice he would give students and professionals considering locs, his response was simple:

“Keep it.” 👑

Sometimes representation is seeing someone who looks like you enter a profession. Other times, it’s seeing them lead within it.

Thank you, Dr. Milam, for sharing your story and showing the next generation that authenticity has a place at every level of medicine.

Missed #CSASummerConf26? Here are a few highlights!

This week-long educational event brought attendees and speakers from all over the world. I'm so grateful to everyone who joined us, including @csahq leaders and staff, and the @fsoahu at Ko Olina for making this conference so successful!

It was truly an honor to Chair this event 🙏🏽 Our program offered a mix of traditional refresher-style lectures, panel sessions, case-based discussions, and live demonstrations on #anesthesiology topics ranging from evidence updates and clinical pearls to professional development, economics, wellbeing, and practice management.

Save the dates for next year's CSA Summer Conference: July 12-16, 2027! I'll be back as Chair, and we have an outstanding group of speakers lined up to cover topics in regional anesthesia, workforce and staffing, pediatric anesthesia, airway, perioperative medicine, ambulatory and non-OR anesthesia, patient safety, cardiac anesthesia, team communication, obstetric anesthesia, innovative technologies, and more!

Adam Milam knew at 10 that he wanted to be a doctor. Now he’s back at Hopkins, where he earned three degrees, and is launching a new lab focused on closing healthcare gaps in surgical care. He’s living in his great grandfather’s house, blocks from where it all started.

“My goal was to get back into Hopkins, but I thought it would be at the very end of my career. This happened a lot sooner than I expected.”

I’ve seen comments and videos in response to the viral video circulating of the pregnant patient in active labor who showed up to the hospital and the nurse was completely dismissive of her while she was in incredible pain and ready to deliver her baby. Some may ask what we can do for someone who is in active labor and whose baby is going to be delivered in minutes. The short answer is, a lot more than you think. These 5 things should be standard for anyone (bare minimum) who’s in active labor.

1️⃣ Show compassion and empathy

2️⃣ Get the patient into a room right away

3️⃣ Place mom and baby on monitors

4️⃣ Call Anesthesia ASAP (if aligned with their birth plan)

5️⃣ Prepare for a safe delivery - right now

A major highlight of doing what I do is having the opportunity to do outreach and make sure I leave the door open for those coming up behind me. Nobody gets anywhere in life by themselves. Will, determination, and perseverance will get you far in life… being able to pick yourself back up when you fall down. My family kept me covered in prayer, continued to speak destiny into my ears, and encouraged me to keep pushing forward. Additionally, God brought numerous people into my life at the right time who helped me navigate this path. Mentorship goes a long way.

Dream big. Fight through adversity. It’s a long and hard road, but if I can do it, you can do it too. Don’t let anyone or anything tell you you can’t achieve your dreams. If you don’t hear it from anyone else, I believe in you!
