On October 16th, Latin Soul pioneer and legend Joe Bataan was honored by the City of Los Angeles for Filipino American History Month. LA’s first Filipina Councilperson Ysabel Jurado presented the honor to Joe in front of City Council and a full chamber. Joe performed at the evening celebration under the LA sky, and City Hall was lit up in Philippine colors.
Born to an African American mother and Filipino father in 1942 Spanish Harlem, Joe is a storyteller through his songs - of the Afrofilipino Ordinary Guy, the working class, the street smart, the romantic, and the prayerful. Congratulations Joe! A well-deserved honor. Mabuhay!

I prepared the BASS BUILDING show for a seated audience. I designed the set to feel like something you wouldn’t mind sitting in front of for 3-hours, like an altar. I wanted a visual component that encompassed who I felt I was as a cultural performance artist — obviously we went with the one and only @patrick_martinez_studio — so while folks sat in their chairs they could get lost in the depth of the piece. I studied some French stage plays to figure out the lighting — using spotlights to shrink the stage while making it feel endless at the same time. All of it with the understanding that collectively we would be sitting and listening. Gretchen got everyone to stand at the very top of the show and y’all never sat back down! I appreciate y’all for saying, “f**k this theater sh**, let’s turn The Ford into a community rental hall!” 🫡 Whew! Alright, moving on… thank you for taking part in it!

Shoutout to @kcb4eleven and @akbmedia.presents for producing BASS BUILDING. I also met Kat 20 or so years ago. She was the first pinay I ever saw taking on big projects/events. It inspired me. It still does! ✨

Some people just bring an energy that makes you listen and want to hear more. SHE IS HER. Not only did @gretchenbc_ kill it on the mic as host of BASS BUILDING, but she got up to vend for @brwngrlz at @filledmarket at 7am with the same energy. ✨

Will never not get lost backstage at The Ford. But it’s a great problem to keep having because it means my talented ass friends keep rocking the stage. ♥️

This has been such a special Filipino American History Month so far, both personally and professionally. Since we’ve been together, I truly believe that this was the best show I’ve ever seen @bambudepistola do. And like any partner, knowing all the ups and downs and still see the final execution end up being perfect as it was- not perfect as we planned, but because we all did it together- made it that much sweeter.

I have so much love for everyone that performed onstage and everyone in those seats that helped us do a SOLD OUT show at The Ford! What a momentous occasion to share with my fam!

BASS BUILDING at The Ford - Act 2

TO EVERY SINGLE PERSON who took their hard earned money to purchase a ticket, made travel arrangements and celebrated with us at The Ford, I appreciate you beyond measure! When I looked out into the crowd I saw only familiar faces… I saw the faces of people who’ve been coming to my shows since I started, friends and family, comrades I’ve organized with forever, and most importantly: THEIR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN! The years have been more than kind to me, and this past Saturday proved it. 20+ years of doing this and we’re all still here — whether it was out in the crowd or with the ancestors on stage: WE AIN’T GOING NOWHERE!

Lastly, I have to give a gigantic shout out to someone who stepped in at the 25th hour and absolutely owned that stage — @gretchenbc_! In less than two sentences of me trying to convey the concept and the role she was now stepping in to play, she got it immediately. What a talented gem in our community! S/O to @fern_doe and @et_iv for pushing me to make sure she played a bigger role in BASS BUILDING! Also, thank you to @sammay.art for bringing the ancestors into the fray by opening the show with beautiful movement.
