Pt.2➡️Game Music & Anime Shorts➡️

The sound and music departments of Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day were directed by Akira Yamaoka (Yes, Silent Hill fans!) who composed the key tracks of the opening "Denshou Love Letter" and the ending "Galactic☆GAL-ACT".
The in-game OST is a sharp trip into electronic music.
•
The biggest slice of the entertainment cake here is made by the four anime shorts, that build an opera supervised and wanted by the master Katsuhiro Otomo and animated by Studio Sunrise.

•Possesions, directed by Shuehi Morita, is set in Japan in 1700, and tells the story of a traveling repairman that takes shelter in an abandoned shrine during a storm. He will deal with the spirits of old, forgotten, and worn objects, in a triumph of colors and impressive animation.

•Combustible, directed by Katsuhiro Otomo himself, it's about an Edo period love story, drawn like an ancient animated Japanese scroll.
It's a dramatic tale with a focus on the firefighting techniques of that time.

•Gambo, directed by Hiroaki Ando, is the most combat-oriented one.
It's all about a brutal battle between a white bear and a giant evil demon.
Has a rough and granular aesthetic that matches the gruesome violence of the fight.

•A Farewell To Weapons, directed by Hajime Katoki (longtime Gundam mecha designer) and written by Otomo, is probably my favorite of the bunch.
It's a sci-fi adventure in a post-apocalyptic city of the future, that sees a special team of well-trained dudes equipped with the best military technology, engaging in combat against a significantly strong automated tank.

Pt.1➡️The Game➡️

The '80s and '90s were the golden years for Konami. Undeniable is its contribution to the shooting genre during these couple of decades, with so many arcade hits that have grown into legendary series (Gradius, Parodius, Twinbee, Salamander) and excellent standalone titles, even exclusive to home entertainment systems.
•
Crisis Force comes from this latter classification, hitting the Famicom during the end of his lifespan cycle, remaining locked in Japan without a western release to this date, unfortunately.
•
It's a vertical shooting game that squeezes all the hardware resources of the Famicom, delivering an impressive shooting visual show and rampant action-on-screen (with a bit of slowdown sometimes), so that this one could be mistaken for a PC Engine game.
•
Even thou you can play this one simultaneously with a player 2, there's only one ship to choose from. The gimmick here is that you can transform, anytime, this spaceship into three different setups with their respective shooting patterns.
•
Main configuration fires straightforward, config B splits the firepower shooting also backward, and config C has a kind of homing bullets fired from the sides. Each of them has its proper smart bomb.
•
There are two types of bullets: machine gun and laser, upgradable several times by picking up power-up icons. Furthermore, there are speed up, speed down items, and a peculiar kind of power-ups that if collected up to five, you'll transform into a super invincible mecha-bird with terrific firepower.
This lasts for a bunch of seconds, and taking hits will decrease the timer while collecting other power orbs will add some extra time.
•
This isn't a super difficult game and could be a very pleasant 1CC to achieve. Consider that when fully powered up, if your ship takes a hit will survive at the cost of losing all your additional firepower.
•
Crisis Force is a very solid shooting game that rewards an aggressive gameplay approach ( I bet @shmupjunkie likes this one) and along with Recca, is one of the most technically impressive shmups of the 8-bit era.

Pt.2➡️Art & Music➡️
Continues from pt.1…
•
There's only one extra mode in this port, the "X Mode". It isn't truly easier or harder than arcade, but has a different score system that I’ve found more forgiving. A very satisfying one that makes you aim to destroy big enemies to start a scoring combo and to clean bullets. Occasional screen cleaning is a nice help for sure, but on the other side, regular foes drop suicide bullets in this mode (that can be canceled by laser shot).
•
There's also a vital training mode, the feature to save replays, and some graphical and game options to config.
•
Ketsui's graphics are always awesome to watch even nowadays.
5PB hasn't upgraded the pixel art to HD unfortunately, but there's a "pixel mode" that matches the arcade original, my fav filter of the bunch.
•
Excluding the bullets, all the colors are dark and the art direction is heavily focused on realistic, sad, military settings and cold toned vehicles.
•
Superbly-drawn stages let you fly over ravaged cities, an armed harbor, and canyons.
Enemy tanks, jets, chopters, mid-bosses, and bosses are all designed with a great and aesthetically coherent touch.
•
The few illustrations that we have for this shooting masterpiece are by Tomahoru Saito (Front Mission Gun Hazard, Gunstar Super Heroes...), and again, communicate perfectly the "depressing" status of Ketsui's world, such as the difficulty of the game.
•
The awesome OST can't be anything other than an effort of one of the best composers out there, MR. Manabu Namiki.
The music is mostly electronic but has more than a heavy metal moment, with electric guitars that scream challenge.
A pleasant addition to this port is the opportunity to choose between arcade og music or arranged version!
