For your consideration: Best Immersive Album, Miles Okazaki “Miniature America,” (Cygnus Recordings) Consider giving a very strange album a chance to infiltrate the mainstream. This year I remixed this album with @alexiscuadrado for Dolby Atmos and released it on all platforms that support immersive sound. It was a wonderful thing, because I had originally imagined the music on here as a three dimensional experience, with no hierarchy between musicians or where they are located on the soundstage. Check it out at @immersiveaudioalbum or Apple Music.

This is an excerpt from a live performance of my piece “Feast of the Spirit’s Song” in Montpelier, VT. The ensemble is: Anna Webber (@akwebber) on tenor sax and flute, Aurora Nealand (@auroranealand) on soprano sax and vocals, Yuhan Su (@yuhansuyuhan) on vibraphone, Simón Willson (@iamsimonwillson) on bass, and Lesley Mok (@l.esley) on drums. I am offstage, operating audio samples via MAX/MSP. We had two hourlong rehearsals together. I am so grateful for the opportunity to work with these amazing musicians. I am currently in the process of revising and updating the score for this piece and will be making it available for purchase on my website. Video of the complete performance can be viewed on my YouTube channel. ☕️😎⚡️ #kentopham #composer #vcfamusiccomp

Tonight (10/15) @2220arts @jazzrefractions presents @weare_george + @chiquitamagic solo piano GEORGE @akwebber – tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute @ara_ossy – voice, synthesizer Chiquitamagic – synthesizers, voice @flexatone – drums, glockenspiel GEORGE is what happens when groove meets inquiry — when analog warmth and digital edge blur into something both unexpected and deeply human. Formed by composer/drummer John Hollenbeck during the stillness of the pandemic, the quartet quickly became a fully realized ensemble. Chiquitamagic solo piano Chiquitamagic is a Colombian artist and producer living in Toronto Canada. Her music maintains her own sense of harmony & feel while toeing the line between EDM, pop, jazz, & techno. Tickets at angelcityjazz.com #jazzrefractions #angelcityjazz #LAjazz

This Friday (October 16, 2026), we're excited to partner with Earshot Jazz in presenting John Hollenbeck's "George." John Hollenbeck @flexatone is a drummer and composer who invokes the image of the “mythical hydra” to describe his seemingly multi-limbed, highly dynamic, and adventurous artistry. His music, often noted as being uncategorizable, is always fresh and forward-leaning. He is a prolific composer and has performed in many ensembles including his longest-running ensemble the Claudia Quintet as well as the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble For this concert with Earshot Jazz he brings together his latest band called GEORGE @weare_george which includes Anna Webber @akwebber (tenor sax, flute), Sarah Rossy @ara_ossy (vocals, keyboard), and Chiquita Magic @chiquitamagic (voice, keyboard). Nate Chinen writes that “the group combines strategies from experimental jazz, ambient electronics, chamber music and more.” Hollenbeck’s work has been Grammy nominated six times and he has received many prestigious awards such as a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award among others. Hollenbeck received a degree in percussion and jazz composition from the Eastman School of Music and his two greatest mentors were Bob Brookmeyer and Merdith Monk. Hollenbeck has since collaborated with Theo Bleckmann, Gary Versace, Kurt Elling, Chris Speed, and Ben Monder among others.

don’t get too many requests for film but got to dust off the @hasselblad ELX for a fun shoot with Anna Webber for her new record “it’s easier to imagine the end of the world” - out October 30 on @intakt_records. I got to preview it ahead of the shoot and cant wait for you all to hear it! Film is expired Kodak Ektar 100. Second shot is from the Hasselblad H6D with identical lighting and exposure. Both medium format - the digital does well but there is always a little magic with film.

"I like slow processes, and I like making myself imagine what music will sound like rather than having it played back to me, either by myself playing it on a computer or by hand, you know, on piano or saxophone." . We talk with composer and saxophonist Anna Webber about the reality of her physical composition process. . She breaks down her preference for starting new works strictly with pencil and paper. Although she uses a nearby keyboard to check her references on tricky concepts like microtonality, she actively avoids overplaying her ideas to ensure she does not get trapped by the specific sound of the piano. . She discusses her deliberate choice to embrace slow processes early in a project. By refusing to let a computer or an instrument immediately play the music back to her, she forces herself to internally imagine the sound and think through every compositional detail. . Check out the full episode to hear our complete conversation on the realities of modern composition. . #AnnaWebber #MusicComposition #BirchGroveMedia #MusicPodcast #CloseEnoughforJazz

#Intakt459 ANNA WEBBER it's easier to imagine the end of the world... NOW ON PREORDER! 🤩 On this album, Webber gives each band member a tailor-made vessel to showcase their original voice, while seamlessly moving between composed and improvised material. The source material behind the record, works by authors and thinkers who address late-stage capitalism and its effects, encourages Webber and her nonet to value the collective over the individual, a theme reflected in the music through Webber's unselfish approach to bandleading.
