HEAR FROM OUR BALBANCHA FAMILY: MAMA YEYE! All the way from Atlanta to New Orleans, we’re celebrating one of Atlanta’s treasures, Mama Yeye! We are grateful for her continued love and support of the Balbancha Dance Festival and for making the journey to be a student, share space, and immerse herself in the living traditions of the African Diaspora. There is something powerful about being a lifelong student of culture. No matter how much knowledge or experience we carry, there is always more to learn, exchange, and discover. But don’t just take our word for it! Hear from Mama Yeye as she shares her experience attending Balbancha! Her presence reminds us why we created this space: to bring people together across cities, generations, and cultures through movement, music, and community. Mama Yeye, we honor you, appreciate you, and thank you for being part of our Balbancha family! Now it’s your turn to experience the magic! BALBANCHA DANCE FESTIVAL 2026

Ancestors Worship Day Greetings Today we honor the ones who walked before us. Ancestors communion is one of the greatest gifts African people carry into the world. It shows us exactly where our strength lives. It unites us as a people because it unites each of us with our true source of power. The lineage flowing through our blood. For generations our ancestors have carried wisdom across oceans and centuries. They have held it with patience, waiting for us to turn toward them, to listen, to remember. Communion is a living relationship. We build it day by day through offerings, prayers, and devotion. Each time we speak their names, we call forward more power then we can imagine. When we commune with our Egungun, we restore a bond that colonization, displacement, and oppression tried to sever. We reclaim a spirit that was always ours. This practice belongs to every person of African descent. Wherever you stand in the world. Perhaps you are deeply rooted in tradition. Perhaps you are beginning to ask where you come from. Either way, your ancestors are already listening. They are ready to respond. Speak their names today. Let them hear you. Let them know they are remembered. Ase For my name is IfaDARASIMI APETEBI Aya Orunmila. B A S T A R D S O F T H E P A R T Y c.2024 cast resin, red and blue bandanas Before we were rivals, we were kin. My sculpture draws on the Yoruba tradition of Ibeji (divine twins) to reimagine the Bloods and the Crips through ancestral memory. Red and blue bandanas become a shared sacred cloth, binding figures whose kinship runs deeper than their division. Inspired by Cle “Bone” Sloan’s documentary of the same title. The documentary traces the origins of LA gang culture to the disillusionment and systematic disruption of Black political movements in the 1960’s. This work asks us to look beyond the criminalization of Black youth and confront the histories that fractured our communities. It reminds us that our children are sacred and encourages us to remember our connections. #fahamupecou #fahamupecouistheshit #worldwideheknownforthat
