Since day one as mayor, my top priority has been keeping San Franciscans safe. We’re continuing the work to reduce crime, strengthen public safety, and drive our city’s economic recovery forward. And that work starts with supporting the officers who serve and protect our communities every day.

Today, I stood with the San Francisco Police Officers Association to sign legislation that invests in the officers who serve our city and help keep our neighborhoods safe.

When I came into office, SFPD was short hundreds of officers. That’s why I launched our Rebuilding the Ranks plan to hire more officers and restore staffing levels. Now, for the first time in six years, the department is growing again. This new legislation will help us retain and recruit more officers, and by investing in recruitment and retention, we can get more officers out on the beat, reduce overtime costs, and ensure our officers have the support they need to do their jobs safely and effectively—while driving our city’s comeback through public safety

To the men and women of SFPD: thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to San Francisco.

Thank you to SFPOA President Louis Wong, Police Chief Derrick Lew, Assistant Chief Nicole Jones, the Department of Human Resources, my cosponsors on the Board of Supervisors, and everyone involved in these negotiations for your partnership and hard work.
