Yesterday’s vote by the Board of Education marks an important step toward making neighborhood schools a reality in San Francisco. For too long, parents have faced uncertainty under a lottery system that leaves them unsure whether their children can attend schools close to home.

Families deserve a transparent, predictable assignment process that provides stability and allows them to plan for their children’s education. Strong neighborhood schools do more than educate students. They bring families together, strengthen communities, and encourage greater parental involvement.

For Sunset families, this means moving closer to a future where children can attend schools alongside their neighbors, spend less time commuting, and build lasting connections within their community.

But neighborhood-based admissions must also come with a commitment to educational excellence citywide. As SFUSD moves forward, we must ensure every school has the resources, programs, and support students need to succeed.

I look forward to seeing the district turn yesterday’s decision into meaningful results for San Francisco families. by @alanwongsf

Growing up in the Sunset, I went to Jefferson Elementary—not to attend school there, but to wait for a bus to take me to another school.

Families deserve a guaranteed neighborhood-school assignment, while keeping the opportunity to apply elsewhere—including for language immersion and specialized programs. Parents should know they have a school close to home without having to rank preferences and wait for lottery results.

Tonight, I’m urging the school board to move forward with elementary-school assignment reforms as a good first step. The resolution I introduced at the Board of Supervisors goes further, calling for greater certainty in middle and high school, too. Families deserve a system they can rely on throughout their children’s education.

After years of promises and delays, it’s time for action. Certainty close to home and access beyond it. by @alanwongsf

Tonight, let’s move neighborhood schools forward.

The Board of Education will vote tonight on the direction of SFUSD’s new elementary-school assignment system. I’m urging the Board to move forward with neighborhood schools, meaningful access, and a clear path to implementation.

Every family should have a guaranteed neighborhood-school assignment, while retaining the opportunity to apply elsewhere—including for language immersion and specialized programs. Certainty close to home and access beyond it.

We’ve been advocating for this through our op-ed, our community education town hall with the Westside Family Democratic Club, and the resolution I introduced at the Board of Supervisors.

Our resolution goes further, calling for greater certainty across elementary, middle, AND high school. Moving forward with elementary-school reforms tonight is a good first step—not the finish line.

McCoppin Square is getting a playground refresh! 🛝

The children’s play area is temporarily closed for resurfacing, with work scheduled from September 28 through late December. These repairs will help keep this neighborhood favorite in good shape for the families who use it every day.

While work is underway, nearby playgrounds include:

• Larsen Playground — 19th Avenue & Vicente Street
• South Sunset Playground — 40th Avenue & Vicente Street
• West Sunset Playground — 3225 Ortega Street

I know a playground closure can be an inconvenience for families, and I appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements are underway. Thank you to SF Recreation and Parks for caring for the spaces where our kids play and our neighbors connect! taken in McCoppin Square Playground by @alanwongsf

This morning, I joined All American Medical Group, Self-Help for the Elderly, and dedicated healthcare volunteers as they kicked off an effort to bring flu vaccinations directly to 100 homebound seniors across San Francisco.

Our team also had the opportunity to visit 93 year old Mr. Lee and 94 year old Ms. Wan in their homes in the Sunset. It was a wonderful reminder of how meaningful these visits can be for our older neighbors.

For many seniors, something as simple as getting a flu shot can be a challenge. Bringing healthcare directly to their doorsteps helps ensure they receive the care and protection they deserve.

Our seniors have spent decades contributing to our neighborhoods, and we have a responsibility to look after them as they grow older.

A heartfelt thank you to all the physicians, volunteers, and community partners who spent their Saturday making this possible! taken in South Sunset Playground by @alanwongsf

Tech Week comes to the Sunset!

Great to see San Francisco’s tech and innovation community gathering right here in the Sunset for the Sunset Neighborhood Build-a-Thon! I enjoyed meeting so many passionate people, exchanging ideas, and hearing fresh perspectives on how we can build stronger connections and bring communities together.

A big thank you to Josh for organizing and to Tom for opening up the space for such a fantastic event. Excited to see more of this energy in our neighborhood! by @alanwongsf

One of the joys of serving our community is getting to share in the moments that mean the most to people. I was honored to officiate Jeff and Si’s wedding and celebrate the start of their next chapter together. ❤️

Jeff and Si called San Francisco home for many years. The friendships we form and the memories we make here stay with us wherever life takes us. Their wedding was a beautiful reminder of how much it means to celebrate one another and share in each other’s happiness.

Thank you, Jeff and Si, for inviting me to be part of your special day. Congratulations to you both, and here’s to many happy years together! by @alanwongsf

An update on last night’s collision at Judah Street and Sunset Boulevard: Police received multiple 911 calls around 9:39pm involving a motorcycle and a white Honda Civic. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

My thoughts are with the rider, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this collision.

The other driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. SFPD is continuing its investigation, and the cause has not yet been determined. Our office is staying in contact with Taraval Station.

If you witnessed the collision or have relevant dashcam or security camera footage, please contact SFPD at (415)575-4444.

Please take extra care on our neighborhood streets: slow down, stay alert, and look carefully for people walking, biking, and riding motorcycles, especially at intersections and when turning.

Thank you to the first responders who assisted. We will share further confirmed updates as they become available. by @alanwongsf

For 34 years, Virginia has helped Sunset families celebrate life’s happiest moments and find comfort during its hardest ones. 💐

What began as a clothing store on Irving Street grew into S & V Collections, a florist and gift shop now on Judah Street, filled with Virginia’s handmade creations and care for her neighbors.

Her daughter, Elizabeth, remembers doing homework in the back while customers wished her luck on her exams and neighboring merchants became like aunties and uncles. Those memories show how deeply Virginia and her family are woven into our neighborhood.

It was a joy to honor Virginia and celebrate with her family at City Hall during National Women-Owned Business Month. Thank you for all the heart you’ve put into our Sunset community. by @alanwongsf

Had a great time stopping by Lincoln’s Fall Fest and seeing so many students out supporting their clubs!

It was especially fun getting to try all the different food students were selling to raise money for their clubs. As a Lincoln alum, I love coming back and seeing students making the most of their time here and building their own communities on campus.

Had a wonderful evening at the United Irish Cultural Center celebrating the San Francisco Bay Area Law Enforcement Emerald Society’s 27th Annual Awards Dinner.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees: Anne Cassidy Carew, Citizen of the Year; Lieutenant Richard “Rich” Hunt, Officer of the Year; and retired Lieutenant Brian Philpott, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Each represents a deep commitment to service and to the communities that make San Francisco special. It was a pleasure to join friends from across our law enforcement and Irish-American communities to recognize their contributions.

Thank you to Emerald Society President John Hallisy and the entire organization for bringing everyone together for such a special evening and for all that you do for our community. taken in United Irish Cultural Center by @alanwongsf

I was glad to join Branches Church for Joy Day today, celebrating its fifth anniversary with Sunday service and lunch! With a shared meal, shaved ice, and a bounce house for the kids, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The congregation’s diversity reflects what makes San Francisco special—neighbors from different backgrounds and generations coming together in friendship, supporting one another, and building a sense of belonging.

Thank you to Pastor Jake Woodfin and the entire Branches Church family for the warm welcome and for five years of fellowship and service to our city. Happy anniversary! taken in United Irish Cultural Center by @alanwongsf
