In honor of AAPI month and our commitment to standing with the WGA, we were thrilled to donate 200 chais with boba in May to the picketing frontlines, specifically the South Asian Writers Committee! 🧋💪🏽 Our co-founder @tansuphilip is an Indian-American preWGA writer, so this cause was close to our heart 🇮🇳 A huge shoutout to everyone who dropped by and said hello during this amazing initiative (including @mindykaling!) Your support means the world to us. ❤️
Here's hoping the next time we meet, we'll be proudly catering a set where every talented individual is paid fairly for their incredible work! 🎬💰✨Thank you @linapatelwriter @natashachandel for inviting us 🥹

It’s not a you, me, and them thing. It’s an *US* thing.

Today I proudly stood alongside my #SulphurSprings family, #BelAir family, and countless others fighting the good fight. There’s a shift happening and it’s powerful. Spirits are strong and the voices will not go unheard. Like the saying goes…we’re a movement by ourselves, but a force when we’re together. 🤜🏾🤛🏽

It takes a lot of people to make art and many of them don't get the recognition they deserve. So every Thursday I am shining a light on fellow creatives that I have worked with (or would like to)!

Today I am spotlighting a kick-ass female writing team who are also paving the way for newer writers, Tawnya Bhattacharya and Ali Laventhol. I was introduced to Tawnya and Ali at a book signing event last fall by my fiancé, who had worked with them on the TNT series PERCEPTION. I instantly fell in love with their wit and they way the interacted together. And now I am delighted to check out their work on the 2nd season of the hit Peacock series BEL AIR.

I asked Tawnya and Ali a few questions and here is what they had to say:

JOB TITLE: Writer/Producer

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
We have the extreme good fortune of loving so many aspects of our job. Collaborating in the writers’ room and working on set are both exhilarating. But as a team, perhaps our favorite part is when the two of us are developing our own projects from scratch with complete freedom.

WHAT DO YOU WISH ACTORS UNDERSTOOD ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
We absolutely think of actors as creative partners and are open and excited to work with them as such. But by the time a scene is being shot, there have already been so many levels of producer, studio and network approval, it’s more difficult (or sometimes impossible) to make changes. Even if we agree with your notes on the day, our hands might be tied so let’s have those conversations ahead of time! Also, time is money and when actors arrive on set unprepared and are “finding it” through multiple takes it robs them of their best work because the clock is unfortunately ticking. And lastly, every single writer is moving up the food chain so it behooves actors to treat the staff writer all the way up the writing ranks as if they are important (not just the showrunner) because any one of them may have their own show one day. And we all talk ;)

More from Tawnya and Ali in the comments section below - Keep Reading, it’s good!
