This sweet little spot where I hung my hat for the last 12 years is for sale, and the first open house is TODAY! These floors and walls held me through countless ups and downs, life lessons, celebrations, heartbreaks, and changes I never could have imagined when I first walked through the door. I’m grateful to the best neighbors ever, and for this creative bastion of a neighborhood that flourished and inspired more and more each passing year. Even though you’re gone, this ^ Carole energy will fuel me forever. Happy birthday, mom. Somehow we are not eating chocolate cake together today which is really freaking surreal but I have a feeling you’ve put in your order and the heavenly pastry chefs are five stars, and I imagine you are telling them dirty jokes while also rearranging the cosmic décor and making your opinion known on the color schemes of all the constellations and you definitely have thoughts on the placement of the stars and oh by the way, the Artemis II crew named a lunar crater “Caroll” – they almost got the spelling right. by @alaventhol

Last Sunday my mom, Carole, passed away peacefully due to complications from cancer and Alzheimer’s — one hell of a one-two punch. It had been a long road of health challenges, but she met each one with remarkable grace and strength. I am in awe of her resilience. It was as if she used that iron will of hers to tell Death, “Not yet.” And for many years, Death listened.

To me, my mom was larger than life. A force of nature. She was stylish, funny, vibrant. Any room she walked into lit up immediately. Her work as an artist, designer and art consultant took her all over the country and she loved every minute. She curated collections for major corporations and private clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. After my parents’ divorce in the 90s, she and I were a 2-person family. It was tricky at times because we were so different. Mom the extrovert, me the introvert, that kind of thing. But we were always loyal despite the complications. When Phil entered the picture, mom was overjoyed and the last layers of friction seemed to ease. It was a gift to be with her in her final days, watching her sleep for hours as I realize she must have done when I was a baby. I felt the sacred full circle close and all that remained was love. Pure and unconditional. Thank you, mom, I’m grateful for all of it. Rest in peace. You will be missed and live on in our hearts forever.

A few weeks ago we gave Kona a bone to occupy her while we held my Aunt’s memorial at her condo in SD. Kona hung out in a bedroom and the bone was gone when the memorial was done. We figured she finished it. Upon arriving back at my aunt’s today Kon immediately ran upstairs and came down with this. No idea where she “buried” it but she looks so damn proud of herself and so delighted to be reunited with her prized possession. I swear, dogs. They are the best. There’s a lot of terrifying, heartbreaking things in the world right now. And then, there’s dogs. 🐶 @tedspop930 by @alaventhol

Mom turned 85 this weekend. After a summer of elder fraud, police investigations, an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, cancer treatment and a fully developed dissertation complete with attributed sources as to why driving *might* no longer be the greatest idea— we celebrated with giant pieces of chocolate cake! Shoutout to everyone out there who has become the parent to their parent in the blink of an eye. May you find all the laughs, all the desserts, all the support and sweet moments in between the hard ones. Happy birthday, mom! 🎉 by @alaventhol
