What began with savings, a dream, and a student project has grown into something much bigger.

ALBON is proof that one idea can create a ripple effect — building a team, advancing technology, and creating solutions that can do good for the planet.

With support from Taronga's Hatch program and the LG Life’s Good Award, their journey has gone from a university hackathon to developing technology with the potential to transform wastewater treatment across industries.

One small idea. A growing impact. 🌱

Meet Tom Bessell, one of our @oneyoungworld scholars.
As Co-Founder and COO of @albon_au, Tom is supporting the evaluation of an algae-bacteria wastewater treatment system that is currently being prepared for pilot-scale commercial testing. Designed to work alongside existing lagoon infrastructure at meat, dairy and other agri-food facilities, the system uses algae and bacteria to treat wastewater containing nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter. The harvested biomass may be processed into biochar where suitable technical, regulatory and economic conditions are met.

ALBON’s next planned milestone is its first paid pilot at a commercial dairy facility, where the team will collect performance data under real operating conditions.

No startup changes the world alone.

For ALBON, innovation wasn’t just about building technology - it was about building the right community around it.

From engineers and researchers to participating in Taronga’s Hatch program, supported by LG, collaboration has been at the heart of bringing their vision to life.

Because when people with different expertise come together, bigger impact becomes possible.

Collaboration doesn’t just accelerate ideas - they help make them real 🌏

I should warn you.. If you win, the Koalas might keep you up at night 😅

It’s your last chance to vote for this year’s LG Life’s Good Award winner!! You can make a huge difference to one of these founders, and go in the draw to win a night here in the process 🐨

The Taronga Hatch Program of 2026 is coming to an end, and next week the winner will be awarded $50,000 to put towards their mission.

Supported by LG, this program is so much more than just a $50,000 prize, and it’s one that I am proud to be a part of.

The level of support, mentoring, collaboration and guidance that is provided is all designed to accelerate start-ups like this into a place where they can make Real-World Impact 🌏 💚

So go and vote, and show these founders some love. Send their work to anyone who might want to join their mission, and let’s see what Ripple-Effect we can create to help solve problems that affect all of us. Because Life’s Good when we Do Good

From a bedroom lab to real-world impact.

Last year's LG Life's Good Award winner, @albon_au, began with a simple mission and a lab set up in a bedroom. Today, they're growing their impact through a dedicated laboratory, pilot programs, and real-world innovation.

We're proud to support founders who are turning purpose into action.

Now, a new cohort of founders from the Taronga Hatch Program is ready to create their own ripple effect.

Head to the link in bio to vote for who you think should win the LG Life's Good Award, and by doing so, you will go in the running to win a free night at @wildliferetreat

In November 2025, we launched a very special global partnership program with @allianz. The MoveNow Global Social Innovation Challenge is designed to support youth-led social innovation aligned with Allianz’s commitment to empowering young people and strengthening resilience in underserved communities.

The campaign reached young impact founders (aged 18 - 30) in 110 countries and generated 1,010 project submissions across three social innovation categories:

1) Financial Inclusion & Empowerment
2) Health & Well-Being of Communities
3) Climate Resilience

In 2026, throughout January and February, 320+ Allianz employee volunteers contributed 796 hours to virtually score those project submissions and help shortlist 10 finalist projects in each of the three award categories.

In March, 60 Allianz employee volunteer coaches connected directly with these young founders - helping them to practice and prepare to pitch for grant awards of $5,000 USD and $10,000 USD available in each category.

Finally, in April, three online pitching events were held in which our incredible finalist founders pitched to a panel of experienced Allianz panel members and winning projects were selected!

Congratulations to all of the winning projects and a huge thank you to Allianz, Allianz Partners, and the many, many employee volunteers who made this unique programme possible!

MIT finalists and comically large check? Who’s surprised tho 👀 (everyone)

We were 1 place away from the grand prize??? That’s insane??

Shoutout to every team we met at the semis and the finals along the journey. Seeing the technology everyone’s building has restored my faith in humanity.

We got knocked at the global semi-finals last year so to come 2nd this year really reminds me how far we’ve come🤧

🌏 Meet Albon Based in Sydney, Australia, ALBON is an innovative startup working at the intersection of water, climate, and agriculture. Their technology uses natural algae systems to remove excess nutrients from wastewater, helping reduce pollution in water. But what makes it even more exciting is what happens next: the algae can be transformed into a carbon-negative fertilizer that helps restore soil health while capturing carbon. 🌱 Turning pollution into a resource - that's the vision behind ALBON.
Stay tuned as we will hear directly from the co-founder about the story, the technology, and the mission behind the promising startup.🤩 Make sure not to miss it!

As students at the University of Sydney, John Phipps and his team saw the ecological harm caused by toxic wastewater and its impact on Australia’s local ecosystem ⚠️

That’s how ALBON was born, a system that grows algae to treat wastewater before it reaches the environment, then takes it a step further to convert algae into carbon-negative fertilizer ♻️

This innovation is what got John and his team to the 2024 Hult Prize Global Accelerator, where they were coached by mentors to refine their business strategy and gained connections to some of Australia’s most renowned climate tech experts.

You too can be the solution to your community’s challenges while gaining world-class mentorship. If you’ve already registered for Hult Prize 2026 there’s still time to complete your final application!

Registered participants can go to their email for instructions on how to submit their application, 𝗱𝘂𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟭𝟭:𝟱𝟵 𝗣𝗠 (𝗚𝗠𝗧) 𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗲𝗯. 𝟮𝟴.

Don’t let social and environmental problems in your community overwhelm you; take charge and drive sustainability with your own social enterprise.
