“Discoquette” is an embroidery/phenakistoscope animation I made in 2017 in homage to club culture and dancing. I recreated the strobe light effect using neon and glow-in-the-dark threads and created the animation using only three pictures of the same image under different lighting. /
“Discoquette” is part of @textileartscenter 15th Anniversary, Open Studios, and community exhibition; Celebrating Quinceañerx! / On Sunday, June 9th from 3-7pm, let’s party! We’ll share music, snacks, drinks, and textiles, in community. Celebrating Quinceañerx, is on view June 1-9, curated by @nunahueso and @ajelandrameja

We are the curators of Textile Art Center’s fifteenth anniversary exhibition. For this TAC’s fifteens, we want to celebrate with a lot of glitter, color, pomposity, flashiness,”huachaferia” and “corronchada”.

We want to throw the traditional out the window and dance as if the norm didn’t exist. This isn’t about changing from sneakers to heels or dancing the waltz with your father, but about letting your hair down and wearing the outfit that makes you feel divine.

💖 Romi + Ale

On view June 1- 9, 2024
Open Hours: 11am - 8pm
(Closed Fridays)
Quinces Party : June 9, 3-7pm !

Slide 2: “Huachafería” or “huachafada” is everything that does not adhere to an aesthetic norm, a norm delimited by classism, by the fanaticism for beige, by the sterility of sobriety. Huachafería is the ostentatious, the excessive glitter, the fringes with baubles, that pink with red. Everything that escapes the norm, and it is this latter idea that has shaped this exhibition. For TAC’s Quinceañerx, we bring out the glitter to appreciate what was and delight in the possibilities of what will be.

Slide 3: The word “corroncho” is a classist and regionalist adjective used to refer to people from the coast, assuming they lacked manners and were vulgar or tasteless. This adjective comes with a particular aesthetic, outside of what is considered white, simple, and subtle. In other words, something or someone outside of the norm, outside of the traditional standards set by colonialism and therefore, classism, dictated from the center of Colombia. This is how little by little we got inspired to build this exhibition, as a way to resist the traditional. For TAC’s Quinceañerx, we want to give space to glitter, to the pompous and ostentatious, appreciating every sparkle that escaping from the norm offers us.

Hello, Kelly V here! On June 9th we celebrate 15 years of Textile Arts Center, and we’d love to see you there! Celebrating Quinceañerx curators @nunahueso and @ajelandrameja introduced me to the phrase adolescente desenfrenade. Literally translating to UNBRIDLED ADOLESCENCE. Hell yeah 🫶 that is the energy we are bringing to 15!

Friends, submit to exhibit by EOD 4/30 at the link in bio and save the date!!!

🌈KV TAC Executive Director

“We want to celebrate our quinces with corronchada, huachafería, flashiness, pomposidad, glitter y como una adolescente desenfrenade.

Highlighting the festivity’s significance on transition while giving it space for the tradition to grow beyond gender binary, redefining notions of masculinity and femininity.

This exhibition serves as a safe space to explore and reflect on the multifaceted layers of Quinceañerx, reclaiming its essence while acknowledging its historical complexities.

For this, we request submissions from all of the collaborators who have made TAC a place of community, where we can gather, hold space, learn and teach, engage in critical thinking and dialogue.

We are calling all resident alumni, past staff, teachers, interns, students, mentors, critics, curators, academics, patrons, benefactors, past exhibitors, presenters, lecturers, collaborators, and friends to join us for our #TACquinceañerx”

Call for Textile Submissions: Celebrating Quinceañerx 🎊 Curated by Romina Schulz and Alejandra Mejía, @nunahueso @ajelandrameja

CELEBRATION June 9th- SAVE THE DATE!

For 15 years, TAC has been a place that promotes community care. Looking into the future, we want to build a space that challenges race and gender norms while continuing to be a space of creation.

Through textiles, we aim to create a vibrant and inclusive community where voices can be heard, and stories can be shared. Textiles offer a unique medium for expression, allowing artists to weave together narratives of tradition, resilience, and cultural identity.

Join us in commemorating a cherished milestone in Latin American culture through the expressive medium of textiles. We invite textile artists, creators, and enthusiasts to participate in an inclusive and empowering exhibition that celebrates the Quinceañerx tradition while acknowledging its complex history.

About the Exhibition: In many Latin American communities, the Quinceañerx is a significant rite of passage for young women, symbolizing their transition from childhood to womanhood. Yet, behind the festivity lies a nuanced history of syncretism and cultural evolution. This exhibition serves as a safe space to explore and reflect on the multifaceted layers of Quinceañerx, reclaiming its essence while acknowledging its historical complexities.

We want to celebrate our quinces with corronchada, huachafería, flashiness, pomposidad, glitter y como una adolescente desenfrenade.

We are calling ALL resident alumni, past staff, teachers, interns, students, mentors, critics, curators, academics, patrons, benefactors, past exhibitors, presenters, lecturers, collaborators, and friends to join us in person or in spirit for our #TACquinceañerx exhibition.
