“Growing up, I had an issue with how Black people were portrayed within the media…When I first picked up a camera I wanted to separate Blackness from sadness, I wanted to highlight our happiness…I wanted to change the visual narrative of our portrayal”.

Born in Oakland, and raised in San Ramon—Alexis Floyd (@aleexisflyd) uses her camera to re-examine and amend historical portrayals of Black people throughout history.

A recent graduate from The Academy of Art (@academy_of_art) with a MA in Photography, and recently featured in Photo Vogue (@vogue)—her artwork is an exploration into the multiplicity of the Black experience. Inspired by the works of Renell Medrano (@renellaice), Gordon Parks (@gordonparksfoundation), and Campbell Addy (@campbelladdy), she is an image-maker working between art, fashion, and documentary photography.

Within Alexis’ photography, movement plays an important role throughout the composition. She shares that “photography is equally about conversation and connectivity… the relationship between myself and the model, the image and the viewer, these aspects contribute to the motion presented within my images”.

For Alexis, “photography is a feeling before anything else”, and she strives to uplift people through her artwork.
