I feel like I need to apologize for having a decent 2022. I’m even writing “decent” instead of the truth because I recognize that many people had a terrible year. This year for me, was mostly a peaceful & fun ride. I allowed myself to have more pictures taken of me than I ever have before. I’ve always been absent from photos because like many people, I loathe having my picture taken. But I got nice & uncomfortable so now I exist in my own vacation, work, travel & concert photos. I’m really glad I did. And 2022 wasn’t just decent, it was mostly good for me. I laughed, danced & was able to be creative more so than I have in many years. Is it corny to say that feels like a miracle? Yes. Is it also true? Yes. How? Therapy. Being honest with yourself, which is surprisingly difficult. We are all human, after all. Feeling all of those feelings even when they hurt you. But also feeling those feelings when they’re wonderful and make you feel like you can soar past the next obstacle. And if you need to, quit drinking. Everyone will get used to it eventually. 🤗
So thank you 2022. When things get bumpy again, as they surely will, I can look back at this reel and tap into how I felt during these moments. And thanks to everyone on this ride. I do love you so.

WOW!! This week happened to be a GREAT one for us @galleriesatut and for me, personally. Not only did we (I) received the stamp of approval from #MelvinEdwards whose art + practice are examined in my exhibition Melvin Edwards: WIRE(D) AND CHAIN(ED) on view at Christian-Green Gallery, but I also had the honor of being in conversation with Edwards and the incomparable filmmaker @lydiediakhate

The Art Galleries at Black Studies (AGBS) invites you to join the inaugural event for our Salon Series, which hosts conversations between graduate students, faculty, and affiliates of UT and focuses on works from the AGBS and related collections.

The series will kick off with a discussion between Ph.D. candidate Nicole Smythe-Johnson, and lawyer and collector Rudolph Green. They will discuss Green's art collection and its development. The Christian-Green Gallery is named for Green and his wife Joyce Christian. Both made a significant donation of artwork to Black Studies in 2016 and continue to support AGBS as part of their commitment to the study of Black diasporic culture at UT Austin.

The Salon Series is moderated and organized by Nicole Smythe-Johnson, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Art and Art History and 2021-2022 Christian-Green Fellow. LINK IN BIO
