Skier’s Moon has traveled over the mountains to Vermont and is now on view @edgewatergalleryvt in Middlebury. That seems fitting since it was inspired by Vermont photographer Alex Dall’Olmo @alexd_vt ’s image of the full moon setting behind Mt. Mansfield. The photo was taken around 7 am, in bitter cold, hence the beautiful pink winter sky. The colors and composition brought joy to this skier’s heart, and Alex graciously allowed me to use his amazing capture as a reference photo for this painting.

If Stowe is your home mountain, you might argue the trails and terrain aren’t entirely accurate, and you’d be right. My goal wasn’t to paint a trail map of a particular area, but to capture every skier’s love for the beauty of mountains in winter, whatever their favorite mountain might be. (Mine happens to be Sunday River.) I added the row of birch trees in the foreground because they’re my favorite tree, and I love how the whites in the birches, moon, snowy peaks, and trails all move the eye around the canvas.

Thanks so much for such an awesome inspiration photo, Alex!! Your feed is always amazing!!

Friday @stowecider in the lounge, 5-8. As the saying goes, we play for free, but they pay us to move the gear. Every once in a while I go through the box and resort. Not pictured: instruments, stands, mains and monitors. It’s a lot of gear for a few hours of music, but we love it!

And here’s Skier’s Moon - 36” x 36” - inspired by a photograph by the amazingly talented Alex Dall’Olmo @alexd_vt Alex shot this image of the full moon setting behind Mt. Mansfield from Sunset Rock in Stowe around 7 in the morning in -10°F weather last December. (I have skied in weather that cold, and it is NOT fun.) I just loved the pink winter sky and the snow-capped mountains - the colors and composition brought joy to this skier’s heart, and made me so excited for the coming ski season.

Native American tribes each had their own wonderfully descriptive names for each full moon, depending on the weather or a particular activity/event that usually occurred during that time in their region. (Hunter’s Moon, Thunder Moon, Harvest Moon, etc.) Based on the date of the photo, his moon was probably (appropriately) called the Cold Moon, but I decided to use a little artistic license and title it Skier’s Moon.

Those of you who call this mountain home might argue the trails and terrain aren’t entirely accurate. And you’d be right.
