We are in Gaza, living under the constant sound of airplanes that never leave our skies. We hear them above our heads every moment, and fear fills the hearts of our children. We don’t want to hear the sound of death anymore — we just want a chance to live, a chance to survive. Please help us. We are human beings who need safety, mercy, and someone to reach out before we become just a memory."

Happy Louis Armstrong Decca Day! Yes, 90 years ago today, Pops record for Jack Kapp’s Decca label for the first time, fronting Luis Russell’s orchestra for a charming interpretation of “I’m in the Mood for Love.” Though he recorded for several different labels over the years, Decca became his main recording home until 1958.

Next Thursday, October 9, the @louisarmstronghouse will host another listening session with Matthew “Fat Cat” Rivera and myself playing some of our favorite Armstrong Decca sides, beginning at 1 pm. Plan accordingly!

And speaking of Matthew, the @hotclubny continues to be heaven on earth. I dropped in this past Monday for Clarence Williams night and was thrilled to see friends such as Catherine Russell, Yasuhiro Fujioka, David Ostwald, Deb Moran, Rockwell Valentine, Alex Feld, Charles Iselin, and more. I had a special guest with me, too, Pops’s trumpet, as I was the gatekeeper before bringing it to the big CIG affair the next morning. I had a ball and can’t wait to go back—it’s the place to be on Monday nights!

Earlier this year, I did two 90-minute sessions for Jazz at Lincoln Center on Armstrong’s Decca period….somehow we’ll boil it down to 60-ish minutes next Thursday afternoon. In the meantime, I’ll reshare my Louis-on-Decca playlists in my story (sorry, you’ll have to go through several Yankees-related clips before you get there).

Hope to see some pals in Corona next Thursday at 1!
