Doing what I love : surrounded by my drawings.

Featuring works in graphite, small scale dotwork portraits, and large scale works which combined are made up of over two million dots and months of repetitive, laborious nights, across two continents.
::
Rianne ‘the_scream.mp4’ is currently unfinished so her body still has many more dots to go. But I’ve finally found a steady rhythm with my art practice, where I can weave between technically complex dotwork that requires time and patience, and joyful, expressive graphite portraits (of which there will be many more to come).

Amber In The Shadow Of Eucalyptus, 2019.

For months and months I’ve been working on dots, a technique that requires patience, commitment and passion. In recent weeks I realised I had begun to lose that passion. I had no motivation to sit at my desk to dot because I started to think that people only liked my work because it was dots—because it was technical and laborious, and not for the work itself.
::
With this mindset, I struggled. I began looking at abstract artists, resin artists, all sorts of other artists who were posting and drawing regularly, and one thing stuck in my mind: “they’re having so much fun.” I realised I had lost the joy in making art.
::
About a week or so ago, I picked up some pencils. I was working with entirely the wrong sort of paper, a type I used exclusively for dotwork. As soon as I started, I thought “this is too rough”. I was used to the precision of 0.03mm fineliners. But guess what? Despite my preconceptions, I had more fun than I’d had making art in months.
::
I finished this piece in about 8 hours, over the course of a couple nights. It’s different to what I usually do, but I love it because of the joy it sparked in me and the drive to create more.

Yesterday was officially my last day in Iceland 🐑🌋🐟 Back in Canada today after painting my way through Europe for the past four months in what now seems like a dream ✨
.
Spending my last month in Skagaströnd was such an incredible way to end to the trip; painting by day and sauna-ing by night amongst pink skies, fierce winds, volcanic landscapes, and furry horses with an amazing group of artists from all over the world.
.
In these photos is the church of Skagaströnd which faced the studio I worked out of for the month. Its lighting reminded me of a James Turrell work and fascinated me as it seemed to be ever-changing along with the colours in the sky. To the left of it sits the mountain of Spákonufell where Icelanders believe Þórdís (the witch of Skagaströnd) fell to her death after a fight with the local priest. Before she died she hid treasure on the mountain and apparently, if you climb the mountain without looking back, two ravens will meet you and show you where the treasure is 🦅🦅🏔.

Also featured is the Bay of Húnaflói - a bay that my studiomates and I were lucky enough to stare out over everyday - watching the fishing boats drift in and out, mesmerized by the sky's reflection in the water on calm days and the waves crashing in on the rocks on windy days.
.
I may have left a little piece of my heart in Iceland but nothing beats the dream that is my home with my amazing partner and our two cats in Canada. Looking forward to settling back into my cozy little Ottawa studio this month, catching up with all my lovely Ottawa friends 💓🍷, anxiously waiting for my shipping tube full of new paintings to arrive safely 🤞😬🤞 and getting ready to grow a painting garden (aka dye plant garden) this spring 🌈🌱🌈
