Another year another TFO post 🥳

These whirlwind two weeks in Branson were full of great people, incredible music, and good times. Can’t believe my fourth summer with @taneycomofestivalorchestra has come and gone 🤩

I took a classical Eb clarinet solo by Jenni Brandon called “Stardust” and added context by performing the melodies each movement is based on. This one is based on “Blue Skies.” After that, my clarinet colleague, Alex Doyle performed each movement of Jenni’s piece. We think this was a meaningful way to engage with the music of past and present and create new improvisational pathways toward understanding composed materials.

Video is a live performance from Clarinetfest in Incheon, Korea. Thanks to @alextootsnoots for having me as a part of your proposal! @icaclarinet was such a great time. I caught up with many Korean friends, clarinet friends, and even @jeff.s.allardyce.

I’ll be back in Korea before you know it — and with some special guests!

I am looking forward to performing at my first @icaclarinet Clarinetfest in Incheon this July. I know, I know — Korea in July is insanely hot and humid, but I’m still looking forward to being back in one of my favorite places! Come hear @alextootsnoots and me play some music.

I hope to also hang and play with many Korean musician friends as well! I’ll be in Seoul when I’m not at the conference—friends, please let me know where you’re playing if I can come hear your gig!

Northeastern Noël, our annual holiday celebration at @nsumusic, was last night and it was such a special event. Congratulations to @justinkroll on coordinating, directing, and bringing new life into this concert. A huge thanks to all of my colleagues and to all of our musicians who contributed to this event. In particular, this was a special year for me because I had the chance to perform with my students in the Jazz Lab Ensemble, who have been such bright spot in my week this semester. As the semester approaches the end, I’m very tired but also very grateful for my students and colleagues. Music! Bravi tutti!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for Dr. Doyle and Dr. VanHemert’s faculty recital last night, which also featured our own Farren Mayfield on piano, Daron Kirsch on cello, and SWOSU’s Dr. Gregory Rife on saxophone. Our next event is the NSU Wind Ensemble concert on Thursday night at 7 pm in the Center for Performing Arts— see you there!
