POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Some places stay with me wherever I go.

My father is from West Texas, and part of my childhood was spent there, with wide-open land and tumbleweeds blowing through. Years of returning to New Mexico, including extended stays in Santa Fe, have added to those memories.

Westbound brings those landscapes together with the energy of the city that’s always part of me. Oil, acrylic, and Ghost Ranch campfire charcoal meet sculptured paper, nails, and resin, giving the painted surface a physical depth.

Even the strongest among us need to be held.

In What Holds Us, sculptured paper embraces the contours of old-growth redwood. The wood carries its history in every ridge and knot. The paper takes on a protective role: wrapping, sheltering, holding close.

For me, this piece is about care and protection. Recognizing value in what we might overlook. Holding one another close. And extending that care to the trees and the natural world that sustain us.

Some people leave beautiful things along our path.

In the hiking community, “trail magic” describes unexpected kindness along the way. Something offered by another person that brings joy, encouragement, or exactly what you need in that moment.

That idea inspired Trail Magic.

Pine and sculptured paper connect the work to the natural world. Nails introduce an industrial element, a reminder of the ways our lives intersect with nature. The bright, joyful colors hold something of what I feel walking a hiking trail, immersed in the landscape and noticing what’s around me.

For me, this piece is also about the people whose kindness stays with us. What they share becomes part of our own journey, sometimes in ways they may never know.

Seeing these four works installed together in a collector’s home brings that connection into an everyday space.

Make a little room for art this October.

Thank you, @tsgdallas, for including The Long Journey Home at ALG Fine Art in your guide to the best things to do in Dallas this month.

More than 20 new works bring together places I’ve traveled, memories I’ve carried home, and thoughts about what we protect, reveal, and hold close. Paintings, centuries-old redwood, and sculptured paper each tell part of that story.

I’d love for you to see it in person.

We carry so much that no one else can see.

Memories, love, worry, hopes. Things we share freely and things we hold close until we feel ready.

That’s what drew me to grocery bags and lunch bags as a continuation of the paper sculpture I’ve been creating for six years. These familiar objects carry things home, protect what’s inside, and leave with us again. A lunch packed for someone we love can be such a small, ordinary act of care.

In Domestic Travel, a transformed grocery bag rests on a wall-mounted 1970s Herman Miller chair. Two smaller lunch bags are held within it. An opening at the side lets us glimpse what the exterior conceals.

As I deconstruct, paint, sculpt, and resin these bags, I think about the ways we do this ourselves. We protect what is tender. We hide things, sometimes out of fear, sometimes because they are precious. We nourish the people we love. And we decide how much of ourselves to reveal.

Part of my What We Carry series, this piece leaves room for whatever you bring to it, too.

The feeling of getting your spark back.

“After the Fire” is a piece from Christi Meril’s new solo art show “The Long Journey Home”. Beneath the dark surface, bright colors peek through. It’s even more poignant when you know the story of redwood, the wood at the base of this sculpture.

At one point, the species was at risk of being wiped out by deforestation. It was only when legal protections were put in place that the future of the redwood forests were secured. These forests have stood for centuries and endured so much.

This piece has the energy of renewal, persistence and the joy of getting your spark back after facing setbacks.

Come view it for yourself at ALG Fine Art.

Gathered Wisdom is about what we bring to one another.

For me, the braid represents humanity and how we are stronger together. The old-growth redwood holds centuries of history, a reminder of strength and resilience. I love that this recovered wood now has another life as a work of art.

The books speak to the wisdom passed down through generations, how we learn from those who came before us and build on what they’ve shared.

Gathered Wisdom has sold, but you can still see it in The Long Journey Home at ALG Fine Art in the Dallas Design District.

Wednesday–Saturday, 11–4, or by appointment.

Behind the scenes of curating “The Long Journey Home”.

An art show takes weeks, months, sometimes even years to create. Christi’s solo art show “The Long Journey Home” can be traced back even further.

The old-growth redwood featured in the sculptures is at least 200 years old. The charcoal was gathered from Ghost Ranch, land where Georgia O’Keeffe sought inspiration in the last century.

The journey of this artwork can be traced back to before Christi, before us, to the people who came before us. Isn’t that the beautiful thing about all our journeys?

“The Long Journey Home,” a solo art show by Christi Meril, is open now at ALG Fine Art.
