It started with an exhibition. It may lead somewhere unexpected. When Alex Breeze @breeze1778 and I (Alexandra Carr @studioalexandracarr ) began developing Assembly, we wanted to create an opportunity for artists to bring their work together without having to fit a predetermined theme. The first exhibition at the Abject Gallery in Sunderland gave that idea a place to begin. Assembly has grown in ways we couldn’t have fully anticipated. The move to Hypha Studios has brought the work to a new audience, while the experience of making two exhibitions together has encouraged artists to think about what else might be possible. There have been conversations about future collaborations, new exhibitions and even taking Assembly to an international venue. These are early discussions rather than settled plans, but the fact that they are happening feels significant. Artists are thinking bigger, making connections and recognising what can be achieved when a group of people gets behind an idea. For us, this is a reason to keep going. Assembly is developing into a biennial rooted in Sunderland, with ambitions that extend beyond the exhibition itself. Alongside future shows, we want to create opportunities for sculptors through ambitious projects, collaborations, residencies and prizes, bringing artists into contact with new places, people and possibilities. Many of these opportunities will be open to artists beyond the Royal Society of Sculptors, with the aim of contributing to a wider, more connected sculptural community. There is so much happening across the North East, and we want to help create the conditions for more of it to be seen, supported and brought into conversation with the wider art world. We’re taking some time to reflect on what these first exhibitions have set in motion. There is plenty still to work out, but the conversations have begun and we’re looking forward to seeing where they lead. More to come. Follow @assembly_rss_exhibition for future developments. Assembly Hypha Gallery South Bank Gallery 3 42 Southwark Bridge Road London SE1 9EU Exhibition Dates: 8th October – 15th November 2026 Opening Hours: Thursday–Sunday, 12–6pm

I am looking forward to the private view for @assembly_rss_exhibition. It is a privilege to be exhibiting with 34 other members and fellows of @Royal_sculptors @hyphastudios South Bank, curated by @studioalexandracarr and @breeze1778 The exhibition brings together practices spanning installation, object-making, architectural intervention, film, performance, and material experimentation. I am exhibiting The Weight of Ornament which uses the seductive beauty of architectural ornament to expose the hidden weight of colonial wealth, exploitation and lives rendered invisible within Britain’s decorative heritage. The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of free artist-led conversations, tours, performances, workshops, and other encounters, exploring some of the ideas, processes and materials that underpin their practices. Images are a sneak preview. ITERATE finale. After a fantastic final weekend we leave Strange Parade. Thank you to all who visited - the many generous and inspiring conversations with a steady stream of inquisitive neighbours, curious strangers and many supportive friends, family and fellow artists. Taking away so much to ponder and reflect on- the processes of collaboration, compromise and powerful creativity - collectively through curating a group show and individually - bringing our diverse practises together in a shared space. FROM MY FATHER’S HOUSE small relics - iterations of an idea. Things I have made, and found, that mean something to me. Separated from other junk and carefully housed in their boxes these miniature things now carry a value way beyond reason. ITERATE continues @strange.parade - today SATURDAY 12 at 3pm the four exhibiting sculptors @ali_darke @janehoodless @maureen.jordan2009 and @caroline.lambard will be in conversation with CLARE BURNETT @clareeburnett to talk about their work and ideas that have emerged from this exhibition. TOTEMS OF THE FALLEN - and their small iterations FROM MY FATHER’S HOUSE installed in Strange Parade - a small gallery in a former Doctor’s Surgery. Fitting, as relics - whether fake, real or imagined reference the physical life of their owner’s body or a possession held close. These objects hold the hope that a vestige of their earthly existence is retained until they too collapse into mere things and the fantasy of any afterlife disillusioned. Today we’re taking over the Royal Society of Sculptors’ Instagram account to share the work in our exhibition ITERATE @iterate_exhibition at Strange Parade @strange.parade where four members of the society Ali Darke, Jane Hoodless, Maureen Jordan and Caroline Lambard are showing together. Each artist has looked at iterations in their artwork and practice. ALI DARKE @ali_darke TOTEMS OF THE FALLEN and their smaller iterations, FROM MY FATHER’S HOUSE play with ideas of the real, the fake and the miniature and are inspired by relics - remains that are enshrined with a significance beyond their reality. Haunted by their ghosts, relics hold a melancholy absence. Yet they offer a salve to our yearning in the hope, that re-charged by our imaginations these vestiges may become potent with their spectral residues. Created from domestic debris, fabrics and plaster, three ‘life-size’ TOTEMS OF THE FALLEN suggest the bones, sinews and flesh of fragmented bodies. Their smaller iterations, FROM MY FATHER’S HOUSE form a collection of nine reliquaries, housing minute treasured remnants found in Ali’s studio, home and garden. In the process, uncanny associations emerged, recalling the sacred and profane myths heard in childhood.
