✨Class of 2024 Reveal @artpopstreetgallery ✨

Wow, what an inspirational night! ArtPop Street Gallery is a non-profit org that showcases 20 juried-in artists on billboards and digital displays throughout the year. They repurpose the vinyl from retired art billboards by paying local designers to create wearable, haute couture fashion out of the vinyl, which is showcased at the annual Upcycled Fashion Show. 👗 💃

280+ applied for the class of 2024
20 artists were selected

I'm excited to share opportunities to support this wonderful organization in the coming weeks! Congratulations to all of the artists, ArtPop Team, and to Wendy Hickey, founder and Executive Director!

Closing 9/29 - I appreciate all the engagement around this exhibition! It is always exciting to discover kinship through the work, from those who collected Gilded Chicken Feet Charms, Soul Houses and Saint Cards, to all the people who just couldn’t help themselves touching the sweet white stuff on the altar, and, to those who shared their own complex histories and connection to the work. I see all of you!

Check out @allaboutartpodcast with @alexandrasteinacker and her Personal Response essay about my practice (see bio). For a deeper dive, give episode 17 a listen!

“April and I spoke extensively about not only her practice, but how themes of gender, the church, trauma, rituals, intergenerational connections, and more, all tie into her work. She stated, “The work is not just for me”, referring to how others have responded to what she creates and how the work is for the viewer as much as it is for her. The way in which April spoke about her practice had indeed done what she believed throughout my conversation with her, allowing me to open up about my experiences as well as be incredibly receptive to hers.”

LAST WEEK to see the exhibition, where providence and play converge into something else! Stop by and explore the ‘Botanica’ shop - offering small art objects designed to instigate an attitude of radical imagining and possibility. Inspired by Frances’ world, (see Frances Wasn’t a Saint series), which develops upon, and breaks down, antiquated religious matrices, making way for an enlightenment born out of a love without sick conditions.

✨✨✨

“The objects in Marten’s Botanica shop provide the viewer with empowering talismans they can take with them. Marten’s subversion of religious tokens for sale is a critique of the commodification of religion while also providing objects that offer the possibility of alternate modes of spirituality.” - Jenny Mushkin Goldman

✨✨✨

Also, another essay about my practice with podcaster, art historian, curator @alexandrasteinacker coming soon!

“Rites and rituals in communion with an afterlife belong to all humans, especially for those without a belief system or whose belief systems were stripped from them. . . “

Rather than write a long post here about my work with Soul Houses, see the LINK above to read more.
✨
THANK YOU to all the new collectors who keep this work going! Soul Houses can be collected as singles, multiples, and with altars.
