Introducing @alicestfu ❤️📿

“My name is Alice, and I started my journey in fashion when I was a little kid learning how to sew on my grandmother’s sewing machine that she used when she was my age. Not long after I made a few outfits for my Barbie dolls I started making clothes for myself and decided that one day I will study fashion design and that I’d become a fashion designer. However, as I grew older I became aware of what the industry is really like, production lines, exploited workers, art capitalised.. For a time I didn’t trust the industry anymore and pursued fine arts instead. I specialised in fibre/textile art and photography, partly because I still loved sewing, fibre and textiles seemed like the best option. After I graduated from Uni I got a job as a seamstress and I started joking with people that I tried all the ways I can to not be in the fashion industry and now here I am. But then I started to think to myself.. why can’t I use this as an opportunity to learn? And I did indeed learn so much, techniques aside I also started embracing calling my work “fashion” and accepting that fashion can still be art if you want it to be. Hence I try to be as sustainable as possible, spend as much time I need on a piece so that I can present them as pieces of wearable art, incorporate my fine arts practice into fashion, just to redefine fashion for myself, and people happened to like what I’ve made so far.”

I love liminal spaces, especially the ones that look obscure and difficult to settle in. I feel like clinging on to the idea itself of making it my home when, in reality, who knows whether it’s viable for me? It is where everything is ideal and I can feel myself being truly me

Every time I went to an empty house inspection, I would dream of where I would put things, where I would read and also cook, and what I would cook because I truly feel the most safe in my dream and hope of this space, so I will cling onto it until this dream lasts until its last moments.

There’s always beauty in mundaneness and emptiness and blank slates. As nothing is more hopeful than an empty blank page, waiting to be filled.
