"Pareidolia is not simply the mere instance of pattern recognition. It is a human character or trait… to see ourselves in the non-human others and the possibility of a future in each and every life and non-life forms."

Chunbum Park (@chun.park.7)'s latest review takes us inside "Do I know you from somewhere?" at Transmitter Gallery (@transmitternyc) — a group exhibition of sculptural works and installations by Alison Kudlow (@alisonkudlow), Susan Meyer (@suzetmeyer), Hanna Washburn (@hanna.washburn), and Se Young Yim (sey__yim), revolving around pareidolia: "the tendency to impose meaningful forms and patterns onto ambiguous or arbitrary objects and surfaces… to find meaning and presence where none was intended."

Alison Kudlow (@alisonkudlow)'s Ēostee (Risen) "refuses to be a flower, yet it cannot escape the curse or the label. In some ways, the sculpture captures the essence and the core definition of the flower by the nature of its disparate parts working together to reconstruct the idea of a flower more so than any individual flower would."

Susan Meyer (@suzetmeyer)'s Lagoon "serves as a mirror mechanism, in which we observers identify a being with a head, torso, and legs. Our anthropomorphic tendency involves seeking a likeness to ourselves on a symbolic and biological level because we desire a partner who can share our emotions, thoughts, and feelings. We do not want to be alone in the universe."

Se Young Yim (sey__yim)'s Pebble converges "the biological or biomechanical, the natural and the non-life… to the singular image of a rock that moves like a pulsating dinosaur egg from within" — rooted in a childhood memory of her brother cracking an egg he mistook for a baseball, "exposing the smell and the yolk from within."

"If we are unable to respect non-human beings and entities, we are unable to treat other humans with the dignity that we all deserve by the same dismissive logic."

Please join us for the final program of our summer exhibition, a gallery walkthrough on Saturday, August 22, 2:00 - 3:30 PM with curator Alison McNulty and artists Marcy Chevali, Shanti Grumbine, David Licata, and Zachary Skinner.

Shanti Grumbine will also introduce her Curated Reading List for our Open Reading Room program.

Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world is on view through August 29
Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00-5:00 pm
& by appointment

Only two weekends left!

Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world brings together works across sculpture, installation, painting, sound, photography, and works on paper. The exhibition, curated by Gallery Director Alison McNulty, includes work by Hudson Valley and NYC artists Emil Alzamora, Marcy Chevali, Daniel Giordano, Shanti Grumbine, Alison Kudlow, David Licata, Processing Collapse (Michael Asbill and Ripley Butterfield), and Zachary Skinner, along with the posthumous work of celebrated Newburgh artist, Gerardo Castro. While some artists harness flame and heat as a means of material manipulation from one state to another, others document and imagine the releasing and healing potential of burning. Creative alchemy, both literal and metaphorical, stands as a testament to the transient –and transcendent—nature of matter and bodies in an era marked by ecological precarity and political volatility.

Free & open to the public at Ann Street Gallery, 104 Ann Street, Newburgh, NY

Thank you Emma Grimes for this thoughtful review on "Under the Skin" in @autremagazine. Today is the final day to see the show!

"Abject Bodies Populate a Six-Woman Show at Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York," by Emma Grimes, August 13, 2026

"The archetype of the monstrous feminine is front and center in Under the Skin, a group show that brings together six artists whose work examines the female body in relation to the genre of horror [...] In films such as Carrie or Alien, one can argue that the monstrous feminine was broached to be confronted and then controlled, contained, exiled, or punished. But in this photograph from Sue de Beer of an adolescent grotesquely splitting in half, one only finds sympathy.

[...]

The works on view from Haynes, Kudlow, Tellier, and de Beer—in addition to Katherine Hubbard and Carly Ries—interrogate the archetype without trying to contain or even condemn it. In this way, Under the Skin significantly contributes to the way we think about the female body, how we inhabit it, what we consider abject, and, most importantly, what we do with it."

Alison Kudlow’s work is on view through August 29 in, “Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world”.

@alisonkudlow

Alison will introduce her work on August 16, 2:00-3:30PM, as part of a gallery walkthrough with curator Alison McNulty @mcnulty_alison and three other exhibiting artists.

Alison K. writes:

"I capture material in mid-motion, resulting in works that are best described with verbs rather than nouns. Conceptualizing the kiln as a condensed model of geological formation, I create a set of pressures with heat and gravity to which my materials react. With glass oozing, bulging and frothing from ceramic forms, each sculpture feels precarious, like a moment that cannot possibly last.

Often experimenting to develop new processes, I transform ephemeral circumstances into tangible objects. I embody unseen forces in material to slow time and expand a moment. My work is a response to grief, both personal and environmental.

Viewers may find moments of readability—a petal, a fin, a mouth—and a fleshiness that tells us these might be bodies, but fundamentally they refuse language and categorization. Their slipperiness connotes infinite fluid possibilities and any empathy toward them provides a moment of connection with the unknown and unknowable.”
